  1. I'm considering retiring soon and will lose my commercial insurance and I'm not old enough for Medicare. How does CHAMPVA rate as primary insurance coverage? Pros and Cons? Thanks in advance for your response.
  2. Hi Berta, Again, you just keep putting out information that I knew nothing about. I have applied for and been awarded CHAMPVA. Have applied for funeral reimbursement. I wish our daughter, now 26, could use that education benefit, and I will check into the property tax exemption. Yep, I love that thumbs up photo...it's sits on my kitchen countertop. How do I go about contributing to this site? You Rock Ms. Berta!
  3. Service-connection for the cause of death.....IS GRANTED! I give all the praise to my Lord and Savior...we had this deal...no matter what the outcome, I would still trust in Him to take care of me. Savings dwindling, decisions were needed to be made regarding my home, etc. Unless something out of my control happens, I can now breathe. I thank God for letting me find this site and for ALL the encouragement and advise. BERTA, you are one of God's angels. Without your advise and information, this would have never happened. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I hope you are all smiling with me. SEABEE WIFE
  4. I can't seem to stay off Ebenefits. I'm so anxious. I just found this. It looks very promising. Tell me what you think. I clicked on dependents and it shows the following: Dependents on an Award The following dependents are listed on your current award: Table of dependents Name Date of Birth Age SSN Relationship Award Jxxxx Gxxxxxxxx 00/00/1900 0 XXX-XX-xxxx Spouse Compensation Of course, I've x'd everything out but does this mean they awarded the DIC? There are no previous awards so am I to assume this is for DIC Claim?
  5. Yes, I've provided all that and no deposits have hit and letter has been sent. I'm going to expect a denial and be pleasantly surprised if approved. They requested additional info once, which I provided. My concern is the only presumptive was DMII and it is just listed as a 'contributing' factor on death certificate and not the cause of death. If I get a denial, I will be seeking advice on best way to appeal. This process is nerve wracking to say the least. ...To be continued...
  6. My DIC claim just went from Preparation for Decision to Complete in 10 days. Good or bad. GO.
  7. John, I have been watching the documentary. Gut wrenching. Just kids fighting a war that we couldn't win. Makes me nauseous.
  8. Ms. Berta...gotcha...I understand...You have been such a delight and so knowledgeable. So glad that I "met you." I too, will be very interested to see what is added to the presumptive list. My husband's stroke was ischemic. So, with 11 months on the ground, and diagnoses of tongue cancer, MRSA, ischemic stroke, and diabetes, I remain pretty pissed off about this war. Youngsters fighting. You are my new favorite person. May God bless you abundantly and keep you safe.
  9. Ms Berta...I cried when I saw the pictures of Paul's unit and when I watched Part 4 of the PBS documentary tonight. You have been such a blessing. I will keep you posted on my progress...or lack of...Since you are a site elder, can you see my email address and send me yours? I would like to send you something when this is all over...I hope you are right and this will be over soon. Just watching that documentary tonight makes me hopeful that every Vietnam Vet gets 100% disability for ever having to fight this war...
  10. Ms. Berta! I am loving all of this information you are sending my way! Thank you! Fascinating stories and information! My husband's DD214 shows Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Vietnam Service Medal -09Jun69 and yes, in box 30, under remarks, it says "served in Vietnam." He was on CBMU 301 and I have 'enlisted performance evaluations' stating this and that he was serving at a forward combat base in RVN and had fire/security watches in DONG HA. The evaluations range in time from 09JUL69-16MAR70. Are these allowed dates for AO claims? I mailed in the form 21P-534EZ. As I only mailed in the DD214 as proof of service in Vietnam, will I most likely need to send in these performance evaluations? Of course, now, I will need to wait until assigned a "case number?" Thank you again for ALL your info!
  11. Ms. Berta, thank you so much for your information. I did not file in 2015 as I felt I needed to get the death certificate amended first. Quite frankly, I felt the squamous cell tongue cancer was not going to be approved without a long drawn out fight. I procrastinated on contacting the physician that signed the death certificate, but once I did, he added the MRSA, DM2, and CVA. Unfortunately, I do realize that if I am awarded a DIC that it will only be effective with the date of formal request. I sent off my paperwork today. I included medical records that state he had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and electronically signed by the hospitalist. I also sent a copy of his DD214 that states "served in Vietnam." Do you think this will suffice?
  12. My late husband, a 'boots on the ground' Vietnam Vet, passed away in 2015. His death certificate showed cause of death "Tongue Cancer." I have finally been able to get the death certificate amended to show PART I, "Squamous Cell CA Tongue" as cause of death and PART II, contributing conditions to show "Sepsis, DM2, and CVA. The cancer is not on the agent orange presumptive list, however, DM2 is, and possibly soon CVA will be on the list. Since these two illnesses are only contributing conditions on his death certificate, will the VA award DIC or will I be required to jump through hoops to no avail? My husband had never applied for disability. The DM2 diagnosis and CVA occurred after the cancer diagnosis. Thank you for your time and input in this matter.
  13. Wow. I am so humbled by the many responses. Thank you. I just received my husband's death certificate today and it just shows cause of death as base of tongue cancer. I thought that was really odd as his 4 months of hospitalization (non VA hospital) were due to septic shock x3, and stroke related to the sepsis. He was diagnosed with septic shock 2 weeks after the bilateral neck dissection. I'm pretty sure he came home from the hospital with MRSA after the surgery. He fought like hell but the sepsis kept coming back. No, I did not have an autopsy done. Everything is related to the cancer but the sepsis is what killed him? Thank you again for your responses. I'm truly humbled. Also, he was on the ground in Nam not on a ship...
  14. My beloved Vietnam Seabee just passed away last month. He was diagnosed with base of tongue squamous cell carcinoma in 11/2014. Sadly, after a bilateral neck dissection, he had a MRSA infection and eventually succumbed to septic shock. We had never filed a claim with VA as we were too busy trying to survive. Does anyone believe this is worth pursuing? It doesn't appear that VA pays for squamous cell cancers. Does anyone have any input on this subject? Any information is greatly appreciated.
