Berta

The Department of Veterans Affairs this month agreed to pay $900,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a Washington man who died in late 2012 after a VA scheduler failed to refer him promptly to specialized care for melanoma.

I think its a damn shame they wait pay off until after the veteran dies, but its good for his family.

I would like to see the justice done for the veteran while he is still alive.

Maybe then he could die happier knowing that his family is well taken car of.

I agree with georgiapapa the ones responsible should be prosecuted to the full extent of the Law

Cath1 do not settle for that paltry amount. Get a high paid lawyer who will earn his cut. 40k would be a fine payout in 1901. its amazing, they screw up, no consequences, then they even have the audacity to finally say "maybe we were wrong" here's a payout lower than what was paid to the woman who spilled hot coffee on her lap............

As to the original post perhaps it was not just the scheduler who is at fault but the doctor to. There however needs to be some sort of penalty for these folks. even if not fired, then barred from Step increase for 5 years or something....jeez.

i was tlaking to a friend of mine who is 100% about the fact the doctors do no follow up or any calls of "are you still suffering from X that you came in for and i prescribed Y for?"

My private physician has someone follow up on these things, make sure i got the x ray or saw the specialist. if they havent received the exam notes on something, etc.

But i was saying that the VA has NO WANT TO FOLLOW UP it is against their interest to do so. He thinks they just hope you die, and if they ignore you long enough maybe you will. There is not push for checkups or preventative medicine unless you ask for it. they will make a note in their log saying "Veteran should consider diet management for high cholesterol" but never mention that or what to do about it. i know what i need to do but not because of anything they said.

bumping this up-----for a member tt

Some suicides of veterans have prompted FTCA awards.....due to failure to treat or treat in timely fashion to a veteran in distress....

I am sure I posted some of those cases here, available under search...The "wait time" scandal prompted many families  to sue

the VA.
