You can file S.A. Secondary or Related to to your PTSD Meds, but you will need a qualified Dr to nexus the two.  and say in his opinion its at least likely as not the PTSD Meds(name the ones that can cause S.A.) is related to your Medications you take prescribed by the VA...or something close to this   its best a Dr not say its the cause  but related to.

Buck,  if youre not receiving PTSD meds is it still possible to link the sleep apnea to PTSD? I received a rating of 60% and included as my symptoms sleep issues.  had the sleep study done and was diagnosed with OSA.  just got the CPAP.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Tatoo this on your arm so you remember it:

VA does not always tell the truth!!!

So, VA "telling you" that you can not get sleep apnea secondary to PTSD is just plain false.  Do a search from the BVA/CAVC and you will likely find Vets who

"have" been awarded sleep apnea secondary to PTSD.

Black3018  yes you can  but its hard to do that if you have no prior medical records of OSA or any type of sleep disturbance while in military.......buddy statements will help...but without those medical records its less likely.

you can claim secondary to PTSD as broncovet mention, but as Jbasser pointed out the VA is making it hard for Veterans to claim OSA and turning it around  for a different type disease like Lung Disorders /OPCD  ect,,,ect,,,

Check out this link  it tells about secondary conditions!

you have a 60% PTSD Rating and not taking PTSD Meds?

I never knew they gave a 60% rating for PTSD?

Black, "Sleep Disturbances" are checked for and observed during overnight Sleep Studies for SA. You can have "SDs" without having an actual SA DX, and vice versa.

If you have a PTSD DX and at some point down range you're DX'd with any of the 3 SA's (OSA-CSA or MSA) file a Secondary SA to PTSD Claim. It's not a Slam Dunk, expect a probable Denial and be ready to NOD the Decision. VA is very fond of Denying Secondary SA Claimes if you're a Mature Adult Male, BMI 28++ and a 171/2+ neck.

Do some research on BVA SA Secondary Decisions for 14-15-16, very enlightening.

Buck my total is 60%.  50% ptsd, and 10% for tinnitus.  Im also putting in for my scar under my eye from where I took shrapnel.  Im gonna put in for it and see what happens.  Im still waiting on a couple of buddy letters to come in.  Thank you all for thegreat advice and motivation.  I wish I could help people more but the VA stuff confuses me.
