Knee C&P

Rate this question

ShuMan

Question

So I was trying to understand the knee ROM and I just don't get it. Here is the ROM for my LT knee.

[X] Abnormal or outside of normal range

Flexion (0 to 140): 50 to 90 degrees

Extension (140 to 0): 90 to 50 degrees

But at the same time the C&P examiner posted this:

If abnormal, does the range of motion itself contribute to functional

loss? [X] Yes (please explain) [ ] No

If yes, please explain:

unable to straighten knee

Description of pain (select best response):

Pain noted on exam but does not result in/cause functional loss

If noted on exam, which ROM exhibited pain (select all that apply)?

Flexion, Extension

Not sure how this ROM will be rated any guesses?

First off...is this condition already service connected?

IF...and that is a mighty BIG "if"...the VA Rater does the right thing, then the contradictory statements would require clarification.

I have seen a rater send question(s) to a C&P examiner trying to clear up inconsistencies on a DBQ.

This is clearly something that may have a negative impact against you as it can result in an inaccurate rating assessment which would be lower.

Really depends at this point on the quality of the rater you get.

If the decision letter reveals you were harmed...file a NOD as soon as you can round up evidence, preferably an IMO, to dispute the flawed C&P examiner assessment..

Not currently but the C&P doc did put a positive medical option that it is service connected.

I'm really wondering what ratings those ROMs give me?

Limitation of Motion of the Knee

Code 5261: If the knee is not frozen, but is limited in extension and cannot straighten all the way, then it is rated under this code. If the leg can only straighten to within 45° of being completely straight, then it is rated 50%. If it can straighten to 30°, it is rated 40%. To 20°, it is rated 30%. To 15°, it is rated 20%, To 10°, it is rated 10%, and to 5°, it is rated 0%.

extension of the knee

Code 5260: If the knee can straighten, but cannot bend all the way, then it is rated under this code. If the knee can only bend to 15°, then it is rated 30%. If it can bend to 30°, it is rated 20%. To 45°, it is rated 10%, and anything 60° or more is rated 0%.

Now if the knee can move, but cannot either bend all the way or straighten all the way, then it can be rated TWICE—once under code 5261, and once under this code 5260.

Gotcha, so with these measurements:

Flexion (0 to 140): 50 to 90 degrees -- Code 5260 -- more the 60 degrees so it should be a 0%?

Extension (140 to 0): 90 to 50 degrees -- Code 5261--limited to 50 degrees should be rated at 50%

After looking at the chart, the way the C&P examiner entered your knee ROM confuses me.

Hope someone can add to this.
