Some Dic Advice
DIC can become a very very complex issue. I believe everything a DIC claimant needs to know on these claims is here at hadit. But this is some advice I am giving based on the issue of DIC and with having had one to one experiences involving many widows of veterans who claimed DIC over the years. Surviving spouses need a good vet rep to help with their DIC claims. If they feel the rep isn't helping them, then they can drop them and find someone else from a different vet org. The POA must be revoked in a signed letter to both the POA and to the VARO that holds jurisdiction over the claim. A friend , family member, or internet advocates can only go so far in …

ptsd Eligibility For Dependents
Hello, I appreciate who's ever time that replies to my post, as this process is confusing. Recently my daughters father's death was ruled a suicide as a result of his PTSD, that he was diagnosed with approximately 8 months ago. I am unsure if our daughter would qualify for the DIC benefits. There are also his other two children involved and his wife. My question is that, would she and her children be qualified for the DIC benefits. It states on his death certificate ( am not exactly sure of the exact wording) suicide and PTSD. If the children and his wife do by chance qualify, can I start the process for my daughter and then obviously she would start the pro…

Blue Water Navy Widows
I asked a BWN widow to join here and it pays to bring this ship's list up again: The VA AO ship's list is here: If a Navy veteran served during the Vietnam War on one of above ships/vessels, landing craft, brown water boats, etc etc. the VA will concede Vietnam service -incountry. All other Blue Water Navy veterans must prove incountry Vietnam service (meaning 'Boots on ground', even for minimal period of time) (and even if just one boot was on Vietnamese soil -I had a BWN vet's claim like that many years ago). Also http://www.bluewaternavy.org/ contains the Danang Harbor Report (anchor drop versus docking etc) by John Rossie and also the widow who …

diabetes One Widow's Story
Our recent SVR guest, Carol Olzanecki, of Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Association, asked me to post this email she sent me, as a brief description of her and her husband's ordeal with the VA,here in the DIC forum: She has been relentless in helping John Rossie push for the Blue Water AO Equity Act. And also she has been a great claims advocate for many AO widows. And is also at the BluewaterNavy.org web site. "Addressed to the members of the U.S. House of Representatives & the U. S. Senate: Speaking for our dead veterans is something that I have been doing for almost 10 years. It will be 10 years this June that I lost my hero to the ravages of an i…

tdiu A Serious Suggestion For Survivors
About 20 years ago Stars and Stripes ran an article I wrote on DIC. Since then DIC has changed considerably and thinking back, the other articles I wrote for S& S always were limited to the confines of the publication and the regs at time of those articles have changed as well in many cases. The internet itself confines us by space and luckily this forum holds everything I can think of ,as to current and concise DIC information. DIC ,like many veterans claims issues has certainly become more complex in many ways since the days I did work for S & S.. Certainly the valid spouse today, of an OIF OEF vet,who died during the war or from injuries sustained in the …

ptsd Substitution Regs For Veteran Survivors
Survivors are often able to substitute themselves for the deceased claimant if the deceased veteran died with a claim in progress. This is something any survivor should not overlook, particularly with so many service personnel who incurred injuries during the recent war and had a claim pending with VA, yet have died due to the complications of their service injuries. The regs however, cover any surviving spouse and or appropriate claimant who could be legally substituted for the deceased veteran, regardless of the veteran's service period. When the VBM went to print in 2011, NVLSP did not have the final regulations on substitution. I believe this fast letter …

My husband died on 29 October 2011. A few days after his death i received in the mail an answer to his upgrade request which was "we have denied your request for upgrade on your back" . I had my son take me into the local veteran service officer and i requested to file an appeal of the decision. The service officer went ahead and filed the appeal HOWEVER when the regional office got it the service officer called me to tell me that "the claim died upon death of the veteran". He told me that he would send me the paperwork to file for DIC...He never not one time mentioned anything about substitiing myself for my husband. Could i have substited myself for my husband to g…

Should I Attain A Lawyer
MY DIC Claim still has not had a decision made. i am wondering if i should go ahead and obtain an attorney before the first initial decision. Knowing VA like i do i have a feeling that there will be a denial of benefits. My husband was 80% service connected, had a back surgery in october for that service connected injury and died three days later at home. He was released from the hospital the day after surgery and two doctors both contracted by the VA prescribed valium, oxy, sleeping tab with a total of 14 prescribed va PRESCRIPTIONS. etc...death certificate states mixed drug intoxication complicatig recent lumbar surgery. this has devasted my family, it has effect…
