Gold Star Wives -watch for scams
Many DIC recipients are GSW members-I just got this email: "Hello all: Every once in a while organizations are subjects of SCAMS. You can find anyone and anything on the internet and scammers are getting more clever all the time. Sometimes it is a false request from chapter president to the chapter treasurer requesting funds. But this is a new one and please do NOT FALL FOR IT. We would never send out a request like this. Always check the email from the sender. If you have any questions, please contact your officers and ask. Do not ever send money to a request like this!!!!! Here is the wording some of you recently received: Are you available to…

REPS Benefit for Certain Vietnam Vet survivors
None of my former crappy vet reps even knew of this benefit- the older application used to come with the DIC 534, but the forms have changed- https://www.vba.va.gov/pubs/forms/VBA-21P-8924-ARE.pdf This benefit was over $21,000 to me. If your spouse could possibly fall under the criteria, when you die, make sure you have a copy of this form into your Death file-discussed many times at ou radio shows in the Podcast archives. Maybe I will do another show with Jerrel and John in the future on the Death File or the End of Life shows. The REPS Benefit is clearly explained on the form and also is available here at hadit under a Search. REP…

REPS Benefit for certain Vietnam vet survivors
This benefit could involve certain survivors of any Vietnam Veteran (incountry)or Blue Water Navy AO vet. When I applied for REPS the form came with my DIC application long ago. The DIC forms have changed and I guess they dont want survivors to know of this benefit- as that app has to be found at VA.gov but here it is: https://www.va.gov/vaforms/form_detail.asp?formno=21p-8924

Lung Cancer Rating
I am the guardian of the now deceased veteran's daughter. My daughter is 2 years old. He passed in September of 2019. He was diagnosed with Pageants disease in 2/2010. He decided to pursue his claim again because of our baby girl. He opened it back up in June 2017. Even after getting a nexus letter that was well supported and documented the VA denied his claim over and over again. Unfortunately, he eventually developed soft connective sarcoma which was for sure on the presumptive list. His VA exam was granted with 100 total disabled nexus letter. He still was denied early last year. He was just devastated. I am pursuing the claim but did not handle his bu…

Lung Cancer Rating
My husband was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, and is an AO Vietnam Vet. The diagnosis occurred during a surgical biopsy and a lobe of his lung was removed at that time. Fortunately, it was caught early enough that he did not need any other treatment. While he was hospitalized after the surgery we became aware that lung cancer is on the presumptive list for Agent Orange. He filed with the VA as soon as he was able, about a month later. My question is this: Does the rating system for lung cancer work the same as for prostate cancer - will the fact that he filed after the surgical treatment of his lung cancer mean that he was then considered in remission (…

Hypertension and Sudden Death
Hello, First I just want to say that I love this community. I always come here to search through posts when I need to find an answer. I’m a vet and the daughter of a vet. I don’t know why I took so long to finally create an account. My current situation: my father passed away a few years ago at the age of 48. His cause of death is listed as “sudden death” on his death certificate. No autopsy was performed. He had a 20 year history of poorly controlled hypertension that kept him in and out of the emergency room and the doctors office. I just received a copy of his c-file and learned that they service connected his hypertension...a decision they came to 3 weeks a…

DIC and Education Benefits
Hi, I am asking for help for a friend that has a meeting with the VA on Wednesday. She receives DIC. Her husband died from an affliction that is service related. He served for more than 30 years, they were married for nearly 40 years and still married at the time of death. She wishes to attend college in her ancestral country of the Philippines using educational benefits. Her concern is whether or not this will affect her DIC in an adverse way. Does anyone have experience on this topic. Any ad ice will be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance.

Veteran dies 10 days after Prostate Surgery
I have a question about determining if an error occurred. I have a friend who recently went into the VA hospital to have his prostate removed (cancer). 9 days later he went to follow up appt. and the following day he passed away at home. The ambulance was called and he never regained consciousness and was taken to a civilian hospital. The hospital said they do not do autopsy's for death by natural causes. I guess I never really thought that a 50 year old dying after a surgery would be considered natural causes. The death certificate listed cause of death "Probable myocardial infarction". If the county is not willing to do an autopsy how do you make sure the VA did nothing…

DIC claimants- a 'Read First'
We have gotten here, from time to time, some difficult and often convoluted DIC claims. And even some 1151 DIC claims, which are often difficult to succeed in as well. There are some things it pays to clear up with the very first post regarding these types of claims. When did the veteran die? When was the DIC application filed? Was an accrued claim filed (only needed if the veteran died with a claim pending at death) and when? Was a substitution form sent to the VA, to substitute as the claimant for the deceased? What is the next of kin's legal standing for the substituted claimant? (Usually the spouse) What was the Primary cause o…
