Question

Hello,

I believe that such question have been asked before but I was looking around and was lost in an ocean of information without a specific answer. If one has 30% disability and is granted 10% for a secondary disability (related to the primary disability) as far as payment/benefit is concerned should one receive 40% or the equivalent to 10% added up to 30%?

thanks

The VA uses a combined rating schedule. We call it VA math and believe me when I tell you it is not Veteran Friendly.

You can view the Combined ratings table at the VA web site and you can also view the Service conenction calculator on the Hadit home page.

It also depends sometimes on the disability code the disability

is rated under.

Some codes are not to be combined.

jmho,

carlie

Carlie, I didn't know that some codes are not to be combined; thanks.

Neurological(8000's) are added together before the VA table for multiple disabilities is used.

TITLE 38 - PENSIONS, BONUSES, AND VETERANS' RELIEF

CHAPTER I - DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

PART 4 - SCHEDULE FOR RATING DISABILITIES

subpart a - GENERAL POLICY IN RATING

4.14 - Avoidance of pyramiding.

The evaluation of the same disability under various diagnoses is to be avoided. Disability from injuries to the muscles, nerves, and joints of an extremity may overlap to a great extent, so that special rules are included in the appropriate bodily system for their evaluation. Dyspnea, tachycardia, nervousness, fatigability, etc., may result from many causes; some may be service connected, others, not. Both the use of manifestations not resulting from service-connected disease or injury in establishing the service-connected evaluation, and the evaluation of the same manifestation under different diagnoses are to be avoided.
