Aw - congratulations to you. Menopause, by letter? Wow, always thought the individual would know first.Honestly - What a insensitive way to find out a diagnosis. Purple, you and each of us women veterans really deserve better and considerate private health treatment. You did very well contacting those agencies - hope to hear the results. Dont think you exactly shorted the VA on your concerns. You struggled for health care appointmment(s) and letter clarification, before sharing your concerns to others. Sometimes it really is a free world and you do make a difference.

I went through menopause and grief - widowdom at the same time. You have my sympathies.

BTW, both are survivable if you keep at it.

Yeah....but the thing is...I'm not in menopause!!! I have zero symptoms if it!

What I do have symptoms of scares the shit out of me. But this "doc" at the Dayton VA is an idiot. I asked what kind of doc she is......no speciality.....she's only listed as a "staff physician". And oh, she's getting ready to go on maternity leave and a brand new resident is taking over....not a Gyn either. She was learning how to do pap tests during my first exam......hurt like hell!!!!

Sure hope she figured it out.

Very scary.

As I/If I receive responses, I'll post them here. I let the Govenor's office know that I wasn't afraid to contact the media about this and also let them know who has been willing to help, and who hasn't been willing to help.

I'm so bad.

  • 2 weeks later...

f/u...had appt with a real gyn doc at WPAFB today. had one biopsy done, have to go back for ultrasound and 2nd appt with different specialist for more in-depth testing and additional biopsies.

told this doc what the VA doc said about being able to dx cancer with a PAP test....he rolled his eyes and told me they were wrong. of course i knew this; but wanted him to know what the VA was telling women.

also the VA didn't send any of my records to the base....all they sent was a referral which said i had "inflammation"....didn't even say that i had 2 abnormal tests!!

those idiots. their (the Dayton VA's) stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

Nope, no other insurance. I am going to see if they will re-new my fee-base gyn doc though. I had gyn surgery in Dec 07 from a real, civilian doc...in a real, civilian hospital. It took me 18 months to get the VA to approve that!!!

I also have an unusual symptom of my cycles stopping and I'm not in menopause. Could be from the surgery...could be something else.

I really don't need this right now on top of everything else!!!!

Purple,

cycles stopping for 6 months and then you get it again for a week and maybe nothing again for 8 months-these are post menopausal things..hot flashes..irritability..etc. Im 52 and started going thru that at 42 ...gyno wanted to do a hysto because he said "eventually you'll need one..but hey no way that was gonna happen--I had 2 full term pregnancies my kids are 25 and 27 now.. ..had 4 miscarrys in between babies.. I did however have cysts and had an myomectomy at 43 its like a glorified DNC.. my paps ok last year/ anyhow, the start stop cycles are normal at your age, everyone is not alike..though/ and I have no family history ..after the myo is when the start stop cycles occured...they say for a year straight of nothing is meno..but I managed to not get a hysto "just because they wanted to do it and sell me estrogen pills......

P.s. another time they thought I had a brain tumor and wanted to operate but they werent sure if thats what it was...you know what my answer was to that...after several other opinions ..it was calcium deposits ...that was 20 years ago..

hope that helps you somewhat Take care Mrs Vet

Thanks mrsvet. I had a procedure (uterine ablation) done in Dec 07 which is probably accounting for my cycles stopping; but I have other symptoms that have the docs wondering what is going on...won't go into those here.

Went to my appt on base with a real gyn doc & he wasn't happy with everything the VA had told me. He did a biopsy and some other tests and scheduled me for an ultrasound and another more intensive biopsy. But here's the kicker....the VA didn't send any of my records over to the base for my appt!! Well, actually they sent 3 things. 1) the referral notice, 2) only one of my PAP reports (but I've had two) and it wasn't a complete report, and 3) and CT scan from Dec 08 that was done to rule out appendicitis!!!

Oh yes. And the Dayton VAMC women's clinic is still claiming they have done nothing wrong. So luckily I have all of my records and will be making copies for the base to take to my next appt. The people at the base said that the Dayton women's clinic does this all of the time. So why doesn't anyone do anything about it??? Well..........I've been writing ugly (but tactfully ugly) e-mails all afternoon to everyone from people at the Dayton VAMC to people that I know in Washington....we shall see.
