Does anyone get the Lantus SolarStar Insulin Pen from the VA. The VA Docs and the VA Specialist (Endocrinologist) will not prescribe (too expensive for the VA) although it is in the formulary as a special request drug. I do not understand why they will not write a scrip for it. I currently get it from a civilian Doctor but pay for it out of pocket.

I use lantus insulin pin but I get it from my private Dr. The VA doc. says he can get this but I don't if it is in the pin form. I like the pin better because my vision is not good and it is eaiser to dial up the correct amount. This med does a good job but you don't want to over do it. Low sugar is just as bad or worse as high sugar. I have collasped a few times. If its in the formulary you can get it but you may have to get someones attention. Good luck.

sorry not on an insulin pen. I'm on an insulin pump, which is a lot more expensive. VA provided it.

Those pens aren't my favorite, never seems like you get the right dose.

I would keep asking, they should be able to force it through.

Good luck....Eric

I get lantus and novalog by pen. I have poor eyesight and they want me to get exact dosage. I have had some grumbling but they do it for me.

Thanks Pete, I alway's respect and look forward to your responces as well as Larry the Hat man. I will keep on them to get the VA to prescribe the Lantus, this is the first time in 32 years that I have been able to keep my blood sugar near normal and stable. without the Lantus I am all over the place.

  • 6 years later...

After great control with Lantus through private insurance (UHC).

This year I went with (Aetna) and they only cover Levemir.

Lantus worked with 25 units average/day. Levemir takes over 60 units/day and still is not working.I hate to increase it to 75 units/day as I'll go broke buying it.

As you compare prices unfortunately Lantus will cost more per RX, but it requires so much less dosage it might be more cost effective to use Lantus.

My private doctor was able to get Aetna to approve Lantus over Levemir.

Hope the VA approves Lantus on my initial visit that comes up next month.
