Issue With Date Of Claim

Question

I am trying to figure out an issue with my recently awarded claim. My claim was originally filed May 2007 (date of discharge) for a bilateral knee disability. It was denied and I appealed and received service connection at a 0% rating with the effective date of May 2007. I filed for reconsideration in November 2009 and then received a rating of 20% a couple days ago. However the effective date given was November 2009 instead of May 2007. I also received a small deposit in my bank account. Can someone please provide me with some information that may help me understand what steps I need to take in order to change this date?

Thanks for your assistance.

the reason that you got the november effective date was because you didn't appeal the appeal. a request for reconsideration is treated as a claim for increase or a new claim....theefoe the effective date would naturally be that of the date that you filed the claim for reconsideration....
