Payment For Medical Bill

Rate this question

Question

I'm not sure where to post this but here goes. A friend of my wifes father who is service connected had a heart attack, was taken by ambulance to the "nearest" hospital which is protocol. After emergency bypass surgery, hospital stay etc., they got a huge bill from the hospital. The hospital told them the VA is refusing to pay the bill because they went to an "outside "hospital. Can someone advise how to handle this, I told my wifes friend I thought the VA is responsible because it was a life threatening situation. Again any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Bergie

What percentage is he SC'd at ?

Did he try to go to a VAMC and get diverted to a private facility ?

Is he SC'd for a condition that led to this emergency surgery ?

Did the hospital say it was life or death ?

Did his family contact his VAMC within 24 hours of

being admitted to the private hospital ?

carlie,

From what she said it was determined by the paramedics to be "life threatening", which was why he was taken to the nearest hospital. I'll have to get back to you on the other questions though. I'll find out and let you know.

Thank you,

you have to put in a claim with the fee basis office at your local va. they may turn you down but you can appeal it and my experience is it takes awhile. i had trouble with this myself they finally paid but it was very confusing.

let us know what the fee basis office says.

I just talked to my wifes friend and told her to file ASAP with the fee basis office. She said she has talked to them by phone, but after I read your post to her she has said she will file immediately.

Thank you,

I think do not pay anything on any bills.

If the vet starts paying it may put the vet on the hook.

Follow Tbirds suggestion.

Thank you carlie,

I told my wifes friend to tell her father not to make any payments.

Thanks,

Bergie
