Veterans groups are blasting Georgia lawmakers for passing legislation that would allow a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder to appear on driver's licenses.

Not only is this unconstitutional, it's patently prejudicial.

If they're going to do this, they need to do it for EVERYONE diagnosed with PTSD, to include police, fire, domestic and rape victims (for example).

The things our government bodies are doing to ostracize veterans is completely dumbfounding, foolish, and down right discriminatory against veterans!

Any application that asks what type of disability and service-connected disability rating you get is illegal, especially military related (as there is no distinction between private, public, or government sectors of employment and injuries related to said employment).

No medical questions can be asked prior to an offer of employment, and even then after an offer is made, the employer has to tread lightly on what questions they ask because of the discrimination in employment liability.

JMHO... In this electronic age we live in, it's just a matter of time...

I worked for the US Postal Service. They have to hire disabled vets. They asked about my disability. I had to bring them a letter from the VA. On the letter it said 10% for a "nervous disorder". The guy in personnel asked if I was too nervous to work 12 hours a day. Then he laughed and said "you look nervous". I wanted to hit him, but then I would have missed out on fabulous career as a mule for the US government. Hippa won't allow such information nowadays. I do think that if a regular employer knows you have PTSD or some such disorder you will be discriminated against for employment by hook or by crook.

I have put in about 20 applications in the past 2 years and ALL the places asked if I was a Veteran and you have to check the box that describes your status ie. Veteran, Disabled Veteran, Reserve...ect. This is for Places like Walmart, Sears, even McDonalds..

Places that hire Veterans get extra credit from the government. What happens if you don't check to box?

An employer is not allowed under employment law to ask about a medical condition, which includes disabilities.

While we have veterans preference points, we fill out the form affirming we have a 10% or higher disability rating; this requires a letter from the Department of VA affirming a rating (similar to the letter used to lower your property taxes), but it does not disclose what conditions are rated. If you (not saying you did, just saying for the benefit of others reading this) used a copy of a rating decision to show this, you shouldn't have. You need the letter from the Dept. of VA that merely states you are rated at x% or higher and it's on record as such.

Regarding your last statement I agree with you about the discrimination; in fact, employers are doing it already. I posted videos of a veterans conference held before a local government body in California (I think) in my blogs at myspace.com/support4veterans a while back. In the hearing a disabled veterans talked about employment discrimination.

Returning veterans here in Oregon, over 50% are unemployed because of their call to active duty in the Guard/Reserves. Their employers didn't retain their position, or won't provide one of equal status, which is required by law.

There is no question that veterans are facing an increasing rate of discrimination, and not just in employment, but schools too. Penn State produced a video entitled "The Worrisome Veteran" that was rather disturbing in its allegations that lumped all veterans together as being unstable and frightening to teachers. This video is on myspace page too in the blogs. It may be archived already though (you can search for older blogs should you wish to view it and other videos).
