How Long For Referral Appointment

On 02/16/2011 I stepped on my dogs food bowel setting on the hallway floor. Twisted by SC back and my Non SC rt knee. Yes it hurt like hell, could hardly stand up for 3 days. Finally broke down and called the VA clinic and talk to my pcp nurse. She asked if my back was SC, I said yes, she said "see you at 3 pm tomorrow. Totally blew my mind. Next day seen the doctor and got the usual No hands on exam from his office chair. Hydrocodone for pain and set up appointment for PT and ortho consult. So it has been a month and still no word on the physical therapy or consult appointment. I would like to get the PT started as my knee ligament or a tendon is popping in and out of place. I bought myself a knee brace and that has really helped but PT is ones that should decide that if I ever get an appointment.By the way the dogs are still pissed at me.

I have had enough of the VA crap. My wife told me if I took all this new medicine the VA wants to give me I would wind up in adult home living facility bed ridden, worthless, and will be dead within a few years. She works in one as a med lead-issues all their daily medicines.

They don't have a clue what in the hell they are doing. Wet behind the ear interns who have to keep asking someone else their opinion ect. I won't have a marriage if I keep going to a VA appointment that as worthless as horse with no legs.

I called my own military doctor(tric care doctor today) and found out I haven't had a physical exam since 2008. So, I am having an appointment in April for a physical and will also get a referral to see an real bonfide neurologist, not some rooky who hasn't even graduated from medial school. VA uses interns, students, whatever they can get to fill there vacanies, much cheaper. Or if all else fails, they will out source you to another private facility with the same criteria.

You can see a real doctor, specialist, however it must be out of your own pocket, unless you have another insurance.

I agree with the statement someone made about the appts wait seems to be based on your percentage category. I think the higher your percentage, the higher the priority for your appts and also if your service connected versus not service connected. Not absolutely sure but it just seems that way from my experience and talking with other veterans.

It's absolutely true..when you enroll at the VA, you are placed in a "priority group"..this is determined by your service andservice connected disabilities, the higher your SC percentage, the higher your PG...

JMHO... I don't think a vet's SC condition or rating would give one a higher priority for appointments, Michellee. I truly don't believe you get faster service if your disability is rated higher than the vet sitting next to you in that long line of people waiting to be seen. My Purple Heart and 50 cents wouldn't get me a cup of coffee any faster at a VAMC than the next guy there. LOL.

You are your best advocate. It is very easy to fall through the cracks in such a massive and overcrowded system. If you think you have waited too long for an appointment, then call the clinic or your PCP or PCP RN Coordinator at the clinic. I would urge you to keep trying until you get results.

Good Luck,

Cmdr. Bob
