Research shows human dietary supplements make old rats youthful

From the University of California-Berkeley

Two dietary supplements straight off the health food store shelf put the spark back into aging rats, and might do the same for aging baby boomers, according to a study at the University of California, Berkeley, and Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.

A team of researchers led by Bruce N. Ames, professor of molecular and cell biology at UC Berkeley, fed older rats two chemicals normally found in the body's cells and available as dietary supplements: acetyl-L-carnitine and an antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid.

In three articles in the February 19 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ames and his colleagues report the surprising results. Not only did the older rats do better on memory tests, they had more pep, and the energy-producing organelles in their cells worked better.

Since we're on health - I have had some issues with the new sugar substitute "splenda". Every time I drink tea with splenda I get chest pains and heart palpatations (quite often)...these symptoms will last for days after using the product. I went to a doctor a few months ago because I hadn't yet linked the problem to splenda and my tests were fine...I came across some articles about splenda and it turns out it is just sugar with a "chlorine" molecule added. The article listed heart issues as a common side effect and listed several other side effects like enlarged thyroid.

Of course the FDA and the manufacterer say it's perfectly safe, but how can drinking chlorine be safe?

P.S. - All of the new soda like pepsi one and coke's "zero" have splenda, as do many new food products.

I use Splenda to cook with and really like it. To sweeten drinks and cold ceral there is no better than equal.

As someone who uses thyroid supplements I can talk about this stuff, but I'm no doctor.

Chlorine and Fluoride are both strongly indicated as major, big-time, thyroid disruptors.

When the thyroid gland gets messed up [everthing else] stops working correctly.

Even though my wife claims that I brush more often than anyone else I never use fluoride.

The chlorine in our city drinking water is so high that it always burns my eyes when showering.

3 water-waste water specialists in my family have tested the chlorine content and declare that it's 6 times higher than necessary to kill anything and everything that could get into the water.

One of them got run off by the head-dude-what's-in-charge of the local water system when he tried to cut down the chlorine content.

By the way, 2 of those 3 'water-waste water' guys are working for the DALLAS, TEXAS waste water system.

All 3 are graduates of the local 'water-waste water' school at Crowder College, Neosho, MO.

I wonder if we can get whole-house water filters with a precription from our doctor?

The wife only drinks bottled water.

I'm a Pepsi Freak.
