  1. Thanks Meg, I called the VA hotline and got some answers. The first guy I talked to was rude and told me to go find my old letters to find out why. I asked him to clarify and he said he thought he answered my question and hung up on me. I called right back and talked to a nice girl who informed me that it had already been noticed and is being included in my retro. I haven't crunched the numbers yet but I got more than I was expecting and looks to be legit. Thanks to everyone for their input
  2. How do I request an audit? Could you be more specific please
  3. Thanks pr I recently went from 30 - 70 and my award letter states that I will be paid $1,366 as a veteran with 1 dependent. I was first SC'd in '10 at 30% and have never been paid for a dependent. My child was born in '07... Historical claims on eBenefits show: Date of Claim Type Date Closed 04/07/2010 Compensation 03/08/2011 03/07/2011 Dependency 05/20/2011 06/04/2013 Compensation 10/30/2013 (pretty quick eh?) So am I owed back pay and if so from when? The date of original comp claim or the date of depend claim? If you look they overlap by 1 day. If I am owed back pay, how do I go about getting it? Thanks
  4. Thank you Berta and Carlie. I really appreciate what you both do around here. I just got the packet yesterday and it did include a 21-8940. I don't have any envelopes or stamps so I was hoping I could somehow do it online. There is an option on eBenefits to apply there but I'm worried it will change the date of claim. I'll just quit being lazy and head to the post office tomorrow.
  5. So I recently went from 30 to 70 and the packet I received said IU has been deferred following completion of VA form 21-8940. IU shows as a new claim on eBenefits and under administrative review. The date of claim shows as the date I originally filled for an increase. I could very easily login to eBenefits and fill out the unemployability benefit application but I'm worried it might change the date of claim because it says start a NEW application at the top. So I guess my question is does it matter how I send the form in? Can I just fill out the unemployability application online? Should I mail it in or scan and upload it as supporting documentation? Will any of these things effect the date of claim? Thanks
  6. Do you receive additional compensation just for having a child or do you need to have custody and be able to claim them on your federal taxes?
  7. Thanks Berta. I believe usajobs.com is the only place to apply for federal jobs now and I know all about veterans preference. I was more interested in knowing if anyone has experience getting a job through voc rehab. Thanks
  8. I have been doing IT work for 4+ years and would like to find a job as a federal employee in the same field. Will the VA be able to appoint me to a job or be of any significant help in achieving this goal?
  9. Looks like your claim is moving pretty fast to me. Texas has one of the highest number of veterans in the country so you should be happy with where you stand. I filed my claim in April '10 and didn't get a C&P exam until the end of November. I received a letter from the VA two weeks later stating that my claim was at the RO and would be reviewed in the order it was received. That's the last I heard from them until today, when I got a call from them asking for information about my daughter. My anniversary is coming up next month but I'm not holding my breath. This is the Boston VARO in case anyone was wondering what the time line is like for this particular office. Good luck!
  10. I've been to the vet center and I always see the same retired CSM. I feel like I'm in that Geico commercial where R. Lee Ermey is a therapist. Well, it's not that bad but he rushes me out of there and suggest that I go to group. I really don't think I can do group right now, I have anxiety just thinking about it. I've found a doctor in my area that charges $150 - 200 a session and he specializes in trauma, anxiety and PTSD. After reviewing my C&P and the requirements for rating I feel that i will probably end up with 30%. That should give me close to enough money for 2 sessions a month. I don't have health insurance and if I get prescribed meds it might be a problem. Can I get a prescriptions filled through the VA if its from a private doctor? Here's a link to a summary of my C&P exam Thanks Testvet BH
  11. I'm not sure what information to give so I will just post what I think is most relevant. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning: Yes Description of the onset of symptoms: Chronic Frequency, severity and duration of PTSD symptoms found: See above re nightmares. Avoids reminders of the war, as they regularly bring back distressing recollections of it for him. He seems largely emotionally disconnected from nearly everyone. Does the veteran meet the DSM-IV stressor criterion? Yes Does the veteran meet the DSM-IV criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD? Yes Axis I : PTSD, Depressive disorder NOS, Hx of alcohol abuse Explanation: Vet's drinking has clearly been to a point of causing problems for him. His depression appears to at least partially be a consequence of his PTSD, but there may be additional factors leading to it as well. The depression is responsible for the difficulties he has with mood regulation. Axis II : No dx Axis III : See problem list Axis IV : Few social connections Axis V : GAF 55 current functioning Is the total occupational and social impairment due to PTSD signs and symptoms? No Do PTSD signs and symptoms result in deficiencies in the following areas (judgment, thinking, family relations, work, mood or school)? No Is there reduced reliability and productivity due to PTSD symptoms? Yes Examples: Re work, see above concerning difficulties feeling comfortable around others. Re school, family relations, see above. Judgment seems ok at this point. Thinking notable for difficulty with absorbing new material, especially of a technical nature. Mood dysphoric, but not seriously depressed at this point (has been in past, though). I'm not sure what the last part is about because I know that I've never felt worst. I also don't understand why he would put that I have no deficiencies in my family relations, work and mood. Seems like that contradicts with the rest of the exam and everything we talked about. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks BH
  12. @Testvet Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion and tell your story. Im going to try and setup an appointment this week. The VA docs seem so cold and impersonal but I guess I will have to deal with it for now. Maybe I can get my family to help me pay for a real doctor. I got a copy of my exam and will post the results in the C&P section. I would love some opinions so please take a look if you can. BH
  13. Thanks for the quick replys. I will try and get a copy of my C&P exam and post it here. I'm guessing it will probably take a few weeks before its available to me? I guess my biggest question now, and I think you misunderstood me in my third question, is will the result of this claim possibly prevent me from getting help again through the VA? I know at some point I will need to get treatment and actually suck it up and stick with it. I would hate to be denied that benefit in the future just because I didn't take this claim seriously. Its been six months since they requested I fill out these forms about stressful events and statements but the claim has seemed to progress. Should I try to get another copy and send them in? I'm pretty sure that my military record will clearly state that I was in combat and would rather not go in to detail about it if I didn't have to. Thanks BH
  14. Hi everyone, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to post in the forum so I'm just going to ask my questions in this Test area since its the only place I can. I've been depressed for a long time and after some strong recommendations from my family I went to the vet center in 2007 to see if I could get some counseling. After talking to him for a few minutes he said he could make me an appointment with a shrink. So a couple weeks later I went to my appointment and he asked me some pretty standard questions about how I was feeling and then prescribed me some meds. I took the meds for a couple weeks and then I didn't see him again. This is my standard way of dealing with things. I tell myself "you need to do something about this" and when I began to crawl out of my hole I fall right back in. I went back to the vet center in April of this year to get another appointment with a shrink. This time I saw a different doctor who asked me the same questions and prescribed me another med. I saw her two more times and then I again quit going. Towards the end of May I received a packet in the mail asking me to fill out an authorization & consent form and something asking about stressful incidents. I assumed that this was required so that I could continue getting treatment and since I wasn't going anymore, I disregarded it. I received a letter in the mail last week asking me to get an examination on Nov. 26th. The exam was a C&P exam, I went home and googled it and found this site. The doctor was nice and took about 2 hours to complete. He asked me a lot about how I was feeling and how this was affecting me but just like the other doctors he never talked with me about what was actually causing the problem, the stressful events. So after reviewing this site, I guess my questions are... - How does the claim come about? Is it standard to start upon seeking treatment or is it a specific request? - Does having a C&P mean I've been diagnosed with PTSD? The doctors have never given me their opinion. - Is this necessary for me to get treatment in the future? Is the purpose solely for monetary compensation? - Would being labeled disabled negatively effect me? - Do I need to present more evidence if I decide to continue? They originally asked me to fill out detailed forms about a stressful events. Thanks to everyone who reads this. BH
