  1. I decided to steal away to a movie. The artsy theater, normally near empty, was packed tighter than a Tokyo subway train. Gander and I took in The Other Son. The film is about babies switched at birth in the midst of a SCUD middle attack on Israel. Predictably, the Jewish family has raised a Palestinian and the Muslims have nurtured a Jew. The movie could have been sappy, overdone nonsense. But, it's tender, authentic and redemptive. A beautiful ensemble with a powerful message. In lig...

  2. I'm deeply troubled that both sides in this bloody battle in the Middle East are leveraging death for the sake of PR. We are dangerously close to sending American soldiers into another endless conflict. My real thoughts: If you support either side's actions in the last week, you support murder. You cannot justify the death of civilians for any reason. Being outgunned does not justify terrorism. Being threatened does not excuse disproportionate and unfocused attacks. No more dead and wound...

  3. I seems to have misplaced my butt.... I'm going to start looking fir it at the gym tomorrow

  4. The good news, bad news department at work again: Doctor left a message on my voicemail. One of my surgeries, a bone graft, has been moved up to the day before Thanksgiving. It seems my doc, a resident at Loyola and only guy that knows this hot new procedure, is rotating out and wants to get me done before he bails. And I have another surgery scheduled for the 29th. That alters my schedule. I'll have to reschedule my NE trip. Sigh. And I had lined up seeing old students at Wharton, St Johns...

  5. Lincoln... If you don't spend the entire movie drawing parallels to the events of the last few months you haven't been paying attention. Lewis is wonderful. His high tenor Lincoln threw me off at first, but grew on me. He's such a gifted actor that even some of the windier monologues foisted on him are beautifully delivered. Sally Fields is in the running for best supporting and Tommy Lee Jones adds to his value as a national treasure--a cranky, craggy, weathered treasure... It's about a De...

  6. Student I assisted with getting into Colorado College wrote me today. And... Students I helped these last 5-6 years get to the US ( large and minuscule assistance both) have now passed the $3,000,000 mark in scholarship aid. Congrats!!

  7. Had dinner tonight with the hospitality team where I stay. They are great people who take a ton of customer service abuse daily. They had great fun teasing me tonight about the holes in my American cultural cache. I told them I only knew a TV show or band if Spotify featured it or the Chinese bootlegged it. And I watched whole seasons in a single sitting so don't expect me to remember much. And all the US movies in LZ are in Chinese with no subtitles. Going to start getting more up on H...

  8. Had lunch with a former Israeli tank commander whose family in Tel Aviv has been under heavy rocket attack from Hamas. #peaceplease

  9. So Here be the tentative plan: Leave Friday from Chicago. Saturday in Kentucky visiting my father's birthplace and WV. Sunday reach Annapolis. Visit my old student at St Johns. Visit Arlington and the Vietnam Memorial. Monday hit NYC. Tuesday or Wednesday be in New Haven. And Detroit on the way back Coffee? Lunch?

  10. Just learned the tall, handsome and articulate black man from NC who has been hanging with Gander the last few days and lives next to me is a Chicago Bear special teamer. Zack Bowman is a gem of a person. No ego about this guy. They practice nearby and he's out the door at 7:30 daily. Sports need more guys like this.

  11. Here's the deal and it is a good one: Insurance replaced my broken Mac. They gave me a 13" MacBook Pro I will sell it for a song ( a rich broadway tune, but a song ) so I can buy a more travel friendly Air. It's 8GB and has like 10 hours of use. It has a loss or damage policy that transfers with it. DM me if you have an interest.

  12. Good New, Bad News They decided to postpone the surgery until the 29th. At that time they will also do a very sophisticated, space age bone graft procedure and extract two teeth that were the result botched root canals in China. My surgeon is incredibly nice and really thorough. He is the son of a Shaolin style Kung Fu and Kenpo* master. We know some of the same people in martial arts. Two attending professors are supervising and looking at procedures that will extend into next the middle...

  13. Veldrina Thank you for being here in addition to all your other duties.
  14. Wow. No sympathy. If you can devote such energy to theft, you can figure out an income stream. Terrible.
  15. Here's a cool piece of Veterans Day trivia: Looking up Gander in Google I discovered my mutt comes up second to a Hong Kong war hero ( real one) who was also a rescue dog: Gander was a Newfoundland dog posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal, the "animals' VC", in 2000 for his deeds in World War II,[1] the first such award in over 50 years.[2] HideMilitary service Gander, initially a family pet named Pal, accidentally scratched a child's face with his paw. Worried that he would be forced to...

  16. Someone at Caribou Coffee (free coffee for Vets today) told me they heard an interview on NPR with someone who has a service dog named Gander! Did anyone hear it?

  17. I confess: I love Veterans Day free food: Appleby's, Texas Roadhouse, Chilis...and free haircuts at Sports Clips... No doubt about the people there for the giveaways: they all look a little like Jethro in NCIS ;-)

  18. Yesterday was the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Many Jews were killed and over 30,000 later rounded up for transport to concentration camps as thugs destroyed Jewish shops on the Night of Broken Glass. I couldn't help but draw a parallel to the campus riots after Obama's victory. We remain a racist and divided country. Martin Gilbert writes that no event in the history of German Jews between 1933 and 1945 was so widely reported as it was happening, and the accounts from the foreign journa...

  19. Ow. Hurts but it went well. Doc says he took out a pea sized mass in my back muscle and that it looks fine. That little bugger caused a lot of pain this year. Glad it's gone. Gander was allowed to stay with the floor nurse and she and the surgical team fell for him and were all flabbergasted at how good he was while I was in the OR.

  20. I really want to take Gander to Washington and have him meet a few Congress folks in hopes of a bill to authorize the VA to provide service dogs for vets with ptsd in advance of the study that is expected to take three more years...

  21. Midnight previews that last longer than three hours are now off limits. I've been acting anesthetized all day and surgery isn't scheduled until tomorrow. Gander keeps looking at me like I should have taught him to dial 911...

  22. Yesterday was dialectical cinema day: Saw The Sessions and Skyfall Session is a sexy, intimate, heartbreaking and witty look at sexuality as a poet and writer unable to move ( but he can conjure an erection) uses a sexual surrogate for his first encounter. It's based on a a true story and is a laugh and cry out loud look at sex and relationships from a man who learned to make the inevitability of an early death his friend. Helen Hunt has aged ( her body hasn't ) and become one hell of an a...

  23. Took my car into the shop then drove their loaner, a swift boat on wheels, downtown. The Chinese Consulate accepted my application. I go to pick up my visa Friday--CCP willing and the creek don't rise. Got off the tollway just as swarms of black vans starting appearing at every exit. Biden or Obama are on the move. Forward, one hopes :-)

  24. I just left AT&T Even with the discount my bill was 100% higher than it is now. Sprint and T-Mobile have better service at cheaper prices.
