  1. Joe, Had the same problem...here is the lender question and answer from DoE: "In addition, does the student have to have an open student loan account in order to benefit from the VA discharge? We have a student who has accounts that he has paid in full previously to requesting the discharge (paid in full back in 1997). His effective date for VA discharge was 1994. Would he be eligible to have those funds returned to him?" Response: "To answer your question, once the account is closed here at (Dept of ED) we do not go back and open the account up. You may email my Team Leader, XXXX.XXXX@ed.gov." In short, since the loan was paid in full it was closed and the loan holders hold nothing to discharge. "After being notified that the Department has approved your discharge request, your loan holders will discharge your loans." Thanks for current info free_spirit_etc!
