  1. I recently moved to a (partial) handicap apartment, it has one bathtub. If owner/management would allow a tub to shower conversation at my expense! I’m 72, spouse is 62, I’m 100% P&T with the VA. My wife is also severally disabled as well, she can’t stand more than a few minutes - both of us are very high risk of falling and unable to get up without assistance. Will the VA allow expenses for a converstion?

You will need her doctor to fill out a 21-2680 attesting to the need of help with the ADLs. You can write down what you are required to do for her every day on a 21-4138. I would also send a llist of her medications. Submit that to a VSO to file for her A&A.

Also,if she does not qualify for SSDI she might can get SSI, which is income based.

Thanks, I'll give it a try and report back.

Buck got A and A for spouse.  Havent heard from him for a while.

Im not sure about SSI, the husband's income may well take her out of SSI.  For VA its "household" income, not necessarlly personal income.  As an example the spouse could not get VA pension, if the other spouse was earning 50,000 per year.

VA income, while not taxable is sort of a grey area, as it counts with some things, not with others.  VA disability is not considered "earned income" so that wont work to get you something like earned income credit, for example, if you care for a child or grandchild.  You would need another source of "earned income".  Also, investment income is not the same as earned income.  Dont take my word for it, however, check the IRS and Social Security rules for your own situation.

    If I recall, Buck's "spouse A and A" wasnt a lot.  https://benefits.va.gov/BENEFITS/factsheets/limitedincome/EnhancedorSpecialPension.pdf

...maybe a couple hundred per month.

James, what is a "tri five" Chevrolet?

Thanks, what has me confused is the documentation infers the veteran is receiving a pension. Only served 4 yrs, I don't get a pension, but I do get VA SC compensation. I submitted an ASK VA form for clarification, haven't heard a response back yet. Learn new thing everyday: "The nickname Tri Five is used to represent a specific set of classic Chevrolet vehicles, namely the iconic 1955, '56, and '57 Chevrolet cars".

  4. I am 100% SC, 72 yrs old and my wife of 30 yrs is 62 yrs young. She has become plagued with Lipedema, Lymphedema, five yrs out from cancer surgery etc... needless to say she has become dependent on me for most ADAs,  to the point where she needs help bathing, walking more than 30 -40 feet ( whenever she falls she is unable to get back up, due to weakness in legs & arms. She is terrified she'll fall and nobody will be around). Would she be eligible for A & A and/or Homebound while I'm alive or does she have to be collecting DIC (meaning I'm dead). Unfortunately, she does not have enough work credits to get SSDI. My 10 yr service connected anniversary comes up in Aug/2023 - not sure if that helps????.

From my reading of the rules for the new insurance, you would keep your old policys in force for the first two years, at which time they would revert to the new insurance program. This is because they are not going to pay out during the first two years.

Depending on your age you could purchase up to $40K of  the S-DVI  insurance. Once you get past 59 under the S-DVI you cannot purchance any more insurance if you have not already puchased the allowable maximum of $40K insurance.

Now, if I understand the rules  you cannot have  both kinds of the insurance at the same time.

The new insurance is guaranteed life insurance much like the globe life and other insurance advertised on TV.  Under S-DVI the would not insure anyone who had a serious condition that was not service connected.

Under the nw program they ask no questions, but as I said will not pay out for the first two years, so while you can convet your presnt insurance to the new program, you will retain your old policys for the first two years,  That way  if you pass during the first two years, they will still pay out.

  6. I'm still a bit confused with S-DVI and VetLife. I have S-DVI with waived premiums which, as I understand it, it is similar to a whole life policy with a 10k benefit. I understand it is good that I have that because the full force of VetLife is is not payable until after 2 yrs. Knowing that, if I signed up for 40k benefit from VetLife would my beneficiary (wife), after 3 years be entitled to 40k + 10K?

  7. Finally!!! I see that my disability status changed from TDIU to 100% scheduler on eBenefits. Brown envelope sent but haven't received it yet. I was 94% scheduler (100% TDIU) but I submitted a claim for 'scar' secondary to a Bypass Operation I had back in 2010. I feel more comfort knowing that the politicians thought about cutting some benefits for those collecting TDIU & SSA retirement at one point. I'm glad that never came to fruitarian... but that doesn't mean they won't try again.

Now that the PACT Act honors hypertension presumptive for AO I was considering filing for it, but here is the thing. I've been taking 5 different meds to control my BP and been doing so for a couple of years... they do a good job keeping them in check. How would they evaluate my benefit level if my BP is within normal limits while on medication? Really don't want to stop meds just to prove a point,,, especially since it probably would not amount to anything monetarily.

I am currently 100% via TDIU and I think.... 94% scheduler (if my VA math is correct?). I ask my VSO to submit a claim for painful scar from a IHD CABG at San Francisco VAMC, for which I was unaware of until a few years ago. My most recent C&P was an increase for hearing from 0% to 10%.... That brought me to 94%, dame, to bad it didn't hit 95% @$#%

Current Service connected: 70% MDD, 60% IHD, 30% Hearing Loss, 10% Tinnitus, 10% DMII  Awarded TDIU 100% Permanent

This morning I had the C&P for Scar and he wrote it up as 'painful'. He also said my last C&P was in 2013 and they should have listed this back then. Although this is the only claim for 'painful scar' I have submitted, if he is correct, does this amount to a mistake or cue? I don't think they are going to backdate the effective date... and if they did, I believe the TDIU was from 2013.

Last question: is my VA math correct and the 10% award for painful scar push me to at least 95%, thereby rounding up to 100%? That's what I'm hoping for.

    Greetings,

If I understand you correctly, if this is your first time applying for scars, I do believe your eed will be the date that you have filed.

Sounds like in 2013, you had a c&p exam for a primary condition but did not claim scar secondary to your primary condition.

As for as VA math, looks like you are correct. When in doubt, I use Hill & Ponton VA calculator.

  9. Hi All,

I read a Military Times article about veterans who may be eligible for SC compensation if they contracted Covid while serving. Presumptive???

The article seemed unclear as to whether or not this would also pertain to veterans (out of service) contracted Covid, I had a hospitalization due to Covid recently, I was admitted because Covid made it look like I was having a NSTEMI. It has been determined I had mild cardiomyopathy which has since resolved. I will still need a chem stress test to rule out and damage. FYI...  I am SC for IHD, DMII, etc due to Agent Orange exposure.

    What do others think?

  11. I am currently scheduler 94% (VA math) but was awarded 100% TDIU Total & Permanent some time ago. I have s-dvi  $10k policy and exempt from premiums. How does the VALife effect S-DVI (premiums waived) if I apply for $30k (or $40k if I could, not sure if I keep my s-dvi or does it convert to VALife). Can I still have s-dvi 10k premiums exempt AND apply for VALife for $40 policy. Anybody have a better handle on this than I?

  12. I filed a claim for Acquired Hemolytic Anemia in Aug 2019, it was rejected due to the worthless DBQ submitted by my Hem/Onc doctor. If I was to gather new evidence that strongly supports my claim (due to Jet Mechanic toxic exposure to AO, Benzene, TCE, PD680, degreasers ....), is it to late to reopen or should I submit a new claim? The only evidence submit in Aug/2019 was the DBQ.

(; I should know the answer, but  he brain is getting a little foggy

  13. Thanks everyone,  I finally broke down and paid $85 each for my wife and myself. I filled out the application, chose a Staples near my home as a walk in. (appt were 2 months out). Two days later I walked into Staples and three days after that my wife and I got our KTN (known traveler numbers) via email. Also, took us both to a local Army base with my commissary letter and got our CAC cards. Incidentally, as previously mentioned, they are good for 5 years, then you have to reapply.

  14. It would be great if you would consider some counseling if you continue having that 'other option' thought on your mind. I am TDIU as well and it can get depressing feeling isolated... especially in these times with Covid, it's not a good place to be for some of us. I don't know when you became TDIU but if you are eligible for Voc Rehab & Ed, you may be able to keep getting your bene $$$ while training for a new job. I think you would keep your benefits $$$ while you train and for sometime afterwards as well. Some pursue college or some a trade. But I would NOT recommend getting some kind of work if it puts you over a substantial living wage (approx 12K). IMHO

    Hi all!!

It’s been a while, hope everyone is well!! For those who don’t have any background on me, I’m 80% TDIU for PTSD. At my last C&P, doc found no change in my condition, so benefits were continued, P&T status granted.

That’s where the good news ends, unfortunately. I’m struggling with feeling very detached from society lately; certain unwelcome thoughts have entered…. I simply don’t know what else to do aside from getting out there and trying to contribute.

I know it’s ill-advised for someone to try working on TDIU, and I understand the risks associated with it… But my VA benefits mean nothing if I’m no longer with us… I just know I can’t sit around and do nothing anymore, so I’m going to try getting a part-time job near my home.

I have done my fair share of research on what might happen as a result of this… but I refuse to let my fear dominate me. Worst case scenario, benefits are stripped and my story ends. If they want to challenge me for it, so be it. But I will no longer feel ashamed for wanting to work… for wanting to be a part of the machine that keeps our economy alive…. To serve a purpose…

A bit unsettling that I may be digging my own grave here…. but when compared to another alternative I have in mind, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea when all factors are considered…

My question is, should I retain a lawyer to be ready for VA shenanigans, or wait until they propose a reduction? I expect a call or letter after I report income… I get so caught up in the thought of fighting the VA that I don’t even consider not being able to handle work anyway…. guess I’m just holding onto faith that I can somehow live a normal life before my time is up.

    be well, everybody :]

HELLO X020574 WELCOME TO HADIT.  GOOD TO HAVE YOU WITH US,  COME TO HADIT ANYTIME.

i BELIVE YOU NEED TO DO THIS.

Veterans can apply for TSA Precheck on their own through the TSA Precheck application program. The program costs $85 to cover the cost of a background check. Military spouses are not normally screened the way service members are and so the government can not ensure that they are cleared.

To receive a expedited screening number to get the 10 digit  DOD ID#  FOR PROCESSING CLEARANCE FOR AIR TRAVEL

I AM NOT 100% SURE   BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER USED THIS ''BENEFIT.''

Thanks Buck52, I'll be shelling out the $85.00 x 2. I thought at one time, maybe 5, 6 years ago TSA did accept DOD #, I was told you could get an ID if you had a letter for Commissary Privileges butut now, you had to be 100% to get that letter. But now you can just use your VA Health ID to use Commissary, so everybody and their uncle gets a bit more challenging to keep tabs on ;)

  17. I am permeant, total, IU 100% for several years now, I'm no 70w years young 😉 . I have heard somewhere that I could get a TSA number for myself & spouse at no cost, if I have a Commissary Letter, but I don't know if that is the way to go since there has been changes to eligibility to commissary privileges. I have online eBenefits Premium, not sure if that will help. Traveling from Boston to Hawaii mid February/2022. Where would I go if I have to go the commissary route - there is a Hanson AFB here near Boston.

    Thanks & Mahalo

Anybody heard when the VAMC start Vaccinating us Veterans?

I realized they are vaccinating the health care workers first thing

I heard through the grapevine that they are suppose to send out letter's for the appointment date to come in and get the shot & return in 28 days and get another dose.  (We need to be vaccinated Twice) for it to be effective.

No letter for me  anybody know? Anyone recieved  the shot yet?

I sent a private msg to my VA PC, they scheduled me for past Friday 1/29/21, I received the !st Modena (luckily no side effects for me, slight soreness in arm similar to Flu shot). What was surprising is while waiting in a que to get the injection, they were taking walk-ins, no questions asked. Go figure.... Boston MA, Jamaica Plains VAMC
