  1. AirForce99, I too have PTSD but have never asked for service connection for it only because I am already rated at 100% but do not let those who have combat related PTSD belittle your symptoms or what you are going through. PTSD can be from what you are describing and I too was in intel during the first gulf war, yugoslavia and assure you that I understand what you are referring to. Hopefully someone with more sense and tact can help you. God bless!!
  2. She is very nice but that doesn't make her a psychiatrist. She is great about knowing meds, etc. but I have a very strong history of mental health med. problems and my psychiatrist was very experienced with bipolar/anxiety. He would openly talk to me about treatment and medications. I have a serious issue with a pharmicist putting something in my diagnosis. It was her because you can see the dr's name. She is a doctor, a doctor of pharmacology. ;) I don't want those words to hurt me from receiving housebound or my husband caregiver benefits in the future.
  3. Mark, Yes the DSM difference I think may be a problem, I am going to call tomorrow and find out why my appointment has been canceled. I really wish my last psychiatrist hadn't transferred!
  4. Agreed broken, I am not post 9/11 therefore my husband cannot receive caregiver, housebound would nice. He has to go pretty much everywhere with me, works at home, etc.
  5. brokensoldier, that is what is weird, this isn't in her notes from the appointment it is where diagnosis are entered. If you go on myhealthevet and look through your records it will say for example, bipolar on such and such date, chronic migraines on another date, among other diagnosis and she put in that list agoraphobia without panic disorder. Should I ask that it be changed, no where in that list of diagnosis does it have panic disorder or agoraphobia in any way. I am fine with it being there, I am going to apply for housebound and I think it will help, my concern is that it may preclude it from being part of my sc mh. I hope that makes sense.
  6. My psychiatrist of 10 years transferred last December, I have been waiting to be seen by a new psychiatrist since calling in March to see someone and have my meds redone. The mental health clinic schedule me with a pharmacist to bridge my meds, I have seen her 3 times. She is has changed my medication every single time. I am on xanax, ativan, etc. as well as meds for bipolar and many other sc issues. This pharmacist put in my record that I have agoraphobia without panic disorder. I clearly have a panic disorder, I have been on anti anxiety meds for at least 10 years, is this so the VA can say it isn't related to my service connected mental health issues? I also noticed that my future appointment with my new psychiatrist has been canceled, with no new one rescheduled!! Is the canceled appointment with no letter, no phone call what is happening to "cook the books" on when we are seen?
  7. I am in Florida and receive SSDI and TDIU, most definitely it is used for child support calculations, I disclose every penny of it. I use it to support my children just like any other income. It may not be garnishable but if you don't pay it, you will lose your license and can be found in contempt. Just because we are disabled doesn't mean we aren't financially responsible for our children which is calculated by the courts quite equitably here in Florida.
  8. I am service connected for bipolar, my only mental health visit during service was when I sought help and the psychiatrist deemed it, "a phase of life crisis"....whatever that meant. That visit and statement alone was enough for the psychiatrist who conducted my c and p, over 10 years after my discharge to service connect me. Many people will say you cannot receive service connection for bipolar, that is false. Often bipolar presents itself early on as adhd or even depression alone, psychiatrist know this and hopefully you saw a good one at your c and p.
  9. I don't think this is a systemic VA problem, I have had the absolute opposite experience. Request a new PCP. My podiatrist referred me to the rheumotologist.
  10. I am wondering if I should filed for an increase for my MH issues, currently rated 30% for bipolar with panic/anxiety, also rated for other things giving me TDIU. My psychiatrist has brought up my agoraphobia a few times but I am beginning to realize it isn't getting any better and I wonder if I should apply for an increase as well as housebound. Does anyone have experience with this, advice? I know my MH rating is much lower than it should be honestly, I am fairly certain with my VA records that 70% would be a definite and possibly 100%.
  11. I completely understand, which is another reason I do not use medicare, useless for me honestly. Champva is nice for my family, we haven't used it in two years, except for my college aged daughter who aged out of her dad's tricare eligibility, she then went onto champva for a year or so while she finished college. I will say the transition from them being on tricare to champva was a NIGHTMARE, had to get my congresswoman involved, etc. Some states do provide medicaid if you are under a certain income limit and medicare eligible, you may want to check into that.
  12. Sadly, veterans even rated 100% PT do not receive champva or tricare (unless they were otherwise eligible for tricare, retired, etc.) I am also disabled through social security and well, it isn't that easy to find doctors who accept medicare. I much prefer the VA where I live, I have had very little complaints over my heatlhcare in the last 10 years. I know not all VA clinics/hospitals are equal, nor are the providers but medicare isn't always the best option either. My dependents do receive champva, although they have never used it.
  13. I agree 100%, the guy I talked to last time said there is no penalty, I then again explained how I had opted in, then opted out and only had VA for healthcare, he had to go and ask someone. Thanks for the info, I might just hold off and wait but will definitely confirm.
  14. I wish the VA had paid me to the date of my claims, sometimes they don't even do that :( I have never heard of being retro paid to the date of injury, date of claim yes but I am curious how that was awarded as well.
  15. Honestly, I have no desire to use the choice program unless absolutely necessary. What is happening in my area is that you will get approved for 2 or 3 visits which still take forever to get and instead of seeing the same provider you just get thrown to whomever is taking VA patients. Thankfully, my healthevet had a glitch and my neuro contacted me after I sent a message to the neuro clinic and she has referred me to the pain clinic. Now, to wait the 18 weeks for my new psychiatrist. ;)
  16. If I opt back in at 65 will I have the 10% per year penalty for all the years that I was disabled and opted out? I was disabled by Social Security when I was 38.
  17. I already know what my penalty will be, I will pay an additional $25 per month so about $145. I am just so hesitant to pay for it,I am not a combat veteran but I think MST also allows you the VetCenter option? maybe I am wrong. I am incredibly disheartened to day with all of the changes to my providers that have given really good care :( I think I will call the Vet Center and find out if that is an option. Thanks!!
  18. I am 100% IU PT, I had the same neuro, psychiatrist, dentist, gyn, etc. for over 10 years. In the last 6 months my psychiatrist transferred, my gyn retired, my dentist mysteriously left and today I went on secure messaging to send my neuro a message about the pain clinic and I am no longer able to message her. I do have a new neuro in my drop down menu in secure messaging so I am thinking she left too. This is extremely frustrating and anxiety inducing for me. I still ahven't seen a new psychiatrist since mine left in Jan., the wait was so long they sent me to a pharmacist to renew my meds and I will see the new psychiatrist in July! I now have to drive 3 hours each way to see a gyn, a dentist, orthopedic doctor, neuro etc. This brings me to my big question, should I sign up for medicare and try to see someone locally using it? I opted out of paying for medicare when I first received SSDI because I saw no need for it honestly, I had received fantastic care for years from my local VA but now I am beginning to think things are getting worse instead of better with the quality of care here. Any advice?
  19. I don't think I have every received one either, same RO and rating.
  20. My husband and children have champva, they go to any doctor we choose. I doubt my husband would ever want to use the VA honestly (and he is a veteran). If I had champva, I would be able to choose where I went instead of waiting for 5 months to see my psychiatrist because my old one moved. I have had wonderful care (for the most part) at the VA but I would still rather have a choice to use doctor like my husband and children do. I would just find a good doctor out in town, champva doesn't have high deductibles or high copays for anything and it is easy to use from our experience.
  21. I was awarded IU permanent and total about 2 years ago. I was already rated at 70% and they didn't send me for a C & P, which probably would have increased my mental health sc issue from 30% to at least 70%. My husband is not eligible for the caregiver program but I may qualify for Aid and Attendance or housebound if I applied but keep hoping that all disabled veterans will have their caregivers eligible for the caregiver program. Have any of you opened a claim when already TDIU to get your rating higher (there is a reason that having 90-100% schedular would be beneficial for my children). My VSO pretty much told me when I received my TDIU not to rock the boat. Opinions, personal experience would be great!!
  22. I have often wondered if I would qualify for L or housebound for similar issues. I have been holding out honestly hoping the caregiver program opens up to Desert Storm era veterans. I would love to know how you went about your claim for L. Congrats!!
  23. Thanks MPsgt, I will just hope they push it out and don't give me a hard time. I am glad I enclosed that letter as well as their paperwork.
  24. I received the paperwork for Social Security a month or so ago saying that my case was up for review. It had some paperwork to fill out, etc. I filled it out and also enclosed my 100% IU permanent and total letter when mailing it back. Yesterday I received a letter back saying that they weren't reviewing my case at this time and that I need to notify social security if anything changes. I have never had any doctor or medical appointment for my SSDI, just my VA records. Do I just sit back and wait for them to decide to review or does this mean they will look at it again in 3 years?
  25. I know my last claim which was for IU, did all sorts of weird things and ultimately was awarded without an additional C&P. Watching where your claim is on ebennies can be extremely annoying.
