Big Pat's Achievements

  1. I have been trying to do some research and someone had posted that even though my dad has had PD from 1988, he will only get retro from when they recognized it on the list. Is this correct? It is good they recognized it, but what about his entire working career that was lost due to PD. I guess I was too optimistic? Just throwing this out to see what you all think.
  2. Wow I have some reading and learning to do I guess. Thanks for the post! I see the max it says in there is like 50%. If the person is totally disabled and is required to use a scooter and such, is 50% the highest PD goes on the disability? Or is there something else I need to work on for him to get to the 100% level? He has not been able to work in 15 years or more due to PD so am just trying to cover my bases. You guys and gals are awesome and a fount of knowledge! Pat
  3. Sorry for the delay to answering, I was on vacation Dad's 10% was only for PTSD and the rest were denied. I got on a conference call with my dad and the VA to get the original claim reopened. I have also filled out the forms so the VA can actually talk to me about the case without having to get him on the phone with us. I mailed that form in (with delivery conf.) to the regional office, so it is just a waiting game now I guess. The RO is supposed to be sending a form to my dad with what information they need for the claim. I called to get some sort of timeframe for them just to send the forms but the operator for the VA was less than cordial. Hopefully it will show up in the mail soon so we can get this ball rolling! I am wondering about one thing, for those that have been diagnosed with Parkinson's and have had the claim accepted and are finished with this process, what sort of % did they qualify you as? Thanks, Pat
  4. Is there any way to actually talk to someone at a regional office? I finally got a fax number from the main VA number but they evidently don't take phone calls. Or is there a way to find a contact at the RO? Must be nice to never answer the phone. ;)
  5. I went ahead and sent my dad's info to them. Hopefully that will help. Has anyone else had experience with them? I guess the more people working on it will hopefully pay off faster. I see it is a not-for-profit which is pretty nice. I didn't know if it was some lawyers just trying to drum up business. Thanks for the info!
  6. I think right now they have him at a whopping 10%. He gets next to nothing a month and has been ever since he applied. I will write them and see what I can get out of the RO.
  7. I am open for ideas. They said they would send the claim down to the regional office and they have paperwork that he needs to fill out I guess. Is this not the way everyone else does this? I have never done any of this so am a greenhorn here.
  8. Wow. I need to read up more on the abbreviations ;) I called the VA and got the claim going. They are going to be sending my dad the paperwork that they need filled out evidently. I would figure that will be copies of the original claim and his DD214 and such. Is it hard to qualify for the 100% rate that is listed on the VA site? If we could get this for him, that would cover the assisted living cares that will be upcoming. That would be soooo much less a stress point that it isn't even funny. Not to mention the umpteen years of backpay that we will be fighting for! What qualifies someone for 100%? Thanks a ton! You are a fount of knowledge :)
  9. I am trying to track down the original claim. Hopefully I will have it soon. He has it all filed away. I did find out that he was classified back in 85 for PTSD at 10%(PD was listed on there so I think we are safe in that regard). What exactly qualifies you for the 100% disability? He hasn't worked in 15-20 years. Will this qualify him for the 100%? I was looking on the VA site but didn't find where it explained the percentages.
  10. Okay a bit of news and wanted to get your takes on this. I found out that my dad still has the original claim he filed back in '85 for Parkinson's with the VA(which was denied back then). I guess he and my mom called and had them re-open the case. I would think this would be a good thing for his eligibility. Currently he is only at 10% I guess. He is on disability and has been for the last 10-15 years or so. Since the original claim was back in 85 and had PD on it for the reason, do you think that it might get retro'd back to that point? His payment now is a slap in the face as far as payment and the higher pension would go a long ways to help pay for folks to come out and help. We have the VA folks coming out now for a few hours a day so that is helpful. What do you all think of the original claim thing?
  11. Thanks all for the assistance! I will do both I guess. It can't hurt can it? Do you all think that this will be enough for the back pay to help with the in-home care for a while? We have been trying to figure out a way of doing this to keep him in his existing house for as long as possible. I would think being diagnosed so long ago, it might be the mucho, mucho dinero to quote LarryJ. If so, it could go a long ways to paying for his care for years I would hope. I know that sounds bad but we are hoping to keep him in the house for as long as possible since the assisted living and nursing homes are not a very attractive alternative, but 24x7 care is a bit steep $$ wise. Thanks again! Big Pat
  12. Thanks for the quick reply. I am a bit fuzzy with some of the terms though. I am fairly new to this. I will work with him and fill out the paperwork again ASAP. What is a favorable EED? I am not sure of the definition of this so I apologize. Would he be eligible for the past 20 years since it was diagnosed or just since they said PD was associated? Thanks for the patience to help me work through this stuff. Big Pat
  13. I am writing this for my father who was in vn and has developed Parkinson's due to exposure for AO. Due to it just recently being associated with AO and Parkinson's, do I need to help him to refile his paperwork to get an upped coverage? Also if anyone knows this as well. Since it is now connected, is there some way for him to get backpay for the 20+ years he has lived with it? He is just now 62 so it hit him early on. I appreciate any help on this! Good to know there is a place to go when you need to discuss this stuff. Big Pat
