  1. I have a meeting with the specialist today and am looking to get a nexus statement from him. I plan on using 21-4138, but what, specifically in the case of sleep apnea does he need to write to ensure the nexus is good to go? Thank you - Chris
  2. OK, I've read some conflicting information on the board regarding the buddy statement; is having them fill out a simple piece of paper, signed, dated, including all the details and their contact information sufficient? Does it need to be notorized or otherwise somehow certified? That would put a little more burden on the folks who are writing the notes. Thanks- Chris
  3. I think DAV will be requesting those; I have some here, but since neither my wife nor I had any idea that stopping breathing and gasping during sleep was a medical/serious issue, we never pursued it while I was in.
  4. I have letters from my folks saying I didn't have issues before the Army, then from a girlfriend and my wife whom I met in the Army stating that I did have the problem. Just back from the sleep clinic, and I'm scheduled to go back again to try the CPAP. My results - apnea hypopneic index of 5.1 per hour of sleep, apnea hypopneic index during rem is 36.3 per hour, and apnea hypopneic index in the supince position was 12.2 an hour, oxygen saturation dropped to as low as 90%. It will be a few weeks before my next appointment where the doctor will tell me what all the above means, in the meantime could anyone with expertise give me a ballpark idea of what the above means? IE, mild, severe, etc and it's pertinence to disability. Thank you kindly - Chris
  5. Thanks all for the responses. I sent in my POA and claim paperwork to the DAV this morning. I don't use a CPAP machine, although I probably should. I had surgery to repair the deviated septum, and I was good to go for awhile after that, but the sleep apnea has returned. I have some upcoming appointments with the sleep apnea folks, I will have another sleep study and this time make sure that I do use the mask. Also will have the doc who did my original surgery sign the nexis letter. Thank you again - Chris
  6. Greetings, Many topics, I hope that I am posting this in the right spot. I'm filing a claim for sleep apnea which I've had for years, I got out back in 1998 and there was no note of the problem them. I suffered a blow to my face from another soldier in Saudi during desert storm in 1990 which necessitated a trip to the field medical center and stitches. Only years later did I realize that it deviated my septum which my civilian doctors tell me caused 100% blockage in one nostril and caused my sleep apnea. Any tips for filing a claim? I'm not sure my Saudi medical records exist, but I've found several members of my old unit who will sign affidavits acknowledge the incident and the fact I was treated. Also, I've contacted DAV and they are sending me a packet with a power of attorney and some other documents so that they will handle the claim for me, is this the best thing to do? I've read a lot of things on the web that seem to indicate that filing a claim is an uphill battle and I'd like to make sure I am prepared. Thank you, and apologies if this is not posted in the correct forum - chris
