  1. I'm assisting my Vietnam-era uncle with his VA Disability claim for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and small cell carcinoma of the lung related to working with petro-chemicals and asbestos while serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Pawcatuck. The claim was filed in August 2020 and was denied 12/9/2020. My uncle was diagnosed with bone and brain cancer in August 2020. They denied his claim for asbestos due to them not finding any scarring on his lungs. The problem I have is that they made no mention of the chemicals he used to work with aboard the ship and claimed his job (Boatswai
  2. Please, welcome new VET2VET podcast episode: https://youtu.be/waV5t0HPtbM Today we are joined by Thomas Wendel, DAV National area supervisor for West Cost Region. Thomas E. Wendel served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1983 until 1997. Since 1999, Tom has worked assisting veterans in processing various entitlement claims on the local, state and federal levels; first in Clare County as a county service officer and then when he came to work for the Disabled American Veterans in 2000. In 2008 he was promoted to the position of supervisor of the DAV Service Office in Detroit and later
  3. Hi, I'm just starting the agent orange application process for my father and have a lot of questions. Would love to get insight from anyone who has been through the process and/or who may have similar circumstances. First, he was on a blue water naval ship (USS Ranger), but he did set boots on ground as part of a work detail when his ship was docked in Vietnam. Has anyone had a similar situation, and if so, did you have to come up with evidence that you set boots on ground? If so, where/how did you find that? Second, he has lewy body dementia, which is believed by experts to be the
  4. Hello Fellow Vets, I'll try to make this a quick an easy read. I joined the Navy in July 2008 and served 5 years of continuous duty. By the time I was out I had several issues that were not present at my join date and eventually filed a claim for my benefits. Upon departure from the Navy, I filed a claim and was denied benefits for headaches, depression, a left knee and right knee condition. When I received my decision packet, it stated that these conditions could be granted a rating if found service connection. When I met with the DAV representative, he stated that if I could have
  5. Hello all. I am new to the disability comp process, and I'll be the first to admit--it sort of freaks me out. There is a lot of complexity to it, and I consider myself fairly learned and understanding of science and causation. Years ago I interned at the local VA hospital, and my dad retired from 20+ years in the VA civil service. Its a bit different walking in the door as a patient. Okay, I had a book practically written below, but I'll keep it short: Really didn't expect basic training to be as hard as it was--the constant screaming, lack of sleep, etc. It WAS NOT like
  6. Please, welcome new VET2VET podcast episode: https://youtu.be/9paX1-FyCaI Today we’re talking about SERVICE CONNECTION. When we talk about service-connecting a medical condition, disease, injury or illness to military service, we are talking about proving the relationship between the two. 1) Direct Service Connection 2) Service Connection by Aggravation 3) Presumptive Service Connection 4) Secondary Service Connection 5) Service Connection due to Injury Caused by Treatment in the VA Healthcare System 6) Special Service Connection Rules for Post-Traumati
  7. Please, welcome new VET2VET podcast episode: https://youtu.be/sTH3p-WwXn0 The way VA defines The word "permanent" slightly differently. For that matter, the word total doesn't mean total when discussing a disability. These are just terms to VA. There really isn't a protected rating. Any rating can be modified by VA at any time, depending on the circumstances. How do you know if your benefit is P & T? What is IU? What is substantially gainful employment? Are there any other eligibility requirements? How is the way VA decides total disability different from other agen
  8. I just wanted to post my success. I was called on 7/22 about one my contentions because QTC did complete the physical for it. She told me she would send the request for an appt at the nearest VA Hospital and send the rest of my claim on. By Friday everything was completed and my appointment was made two week out. My compensation is 50%. Of course I won't know the break down until I get the package. I am really curious to see it. Thanks to Hadit.com I was able to keep from going crazy. Thank you all for posting your stories to keep my nerves down. Claim Received: 06/01/2014 (I start
  9. Hello. This is my first post on hadit. I joined this forum because it seemed like a great place to connect with United States veterans and their loved ones. By the end of this year, there will be less than a million living World War II veterans. It’s more important than ever to share the stories of service from those who fought bravely for our country. I’m representing Glimpses Into History, a project of the Clovis Veterans Memorial District, in finding veterans willing to share a video testimonial of their experience as a soldier. The CVMD has created a way for veterans to record thei
