FORT MEADE, Md. — The Environmental Protection Agency ordered the Army on Monday to clean up 14 hazardous waste sites at Fort Meade and adjacent property that is part of the Patuxent Research Refuge.
Under the order, the Army must assess the nature and extent of the contamination and put corrective measures into place.
The contaminants include solvents and heavy metals, explosives, arsenic and PCBs; elevated levels of pesticides and explosive compounds have been detected in aquifers. Munitions have been found throughout the former range training areas of the base, including parts of the Little Patuxent River.
Low levels of volatile organic compounds have been detected in residential wells in Odenton.
No other drinking water sources are affected, the EPA said.
In 1998, Fort Meade was designated a Superfund site, part of the federal government’s program to clean up hazardous waste sites around the nation."
