Tracking Claims At The Varo

Rate this question

I wonder why the VA cannot institute a procedure to track claims and give one an estimate of review date or number of claims ahead of yours. When I go to the local military hospital to pick up meds I receive a number from which I can tell how many folks are ahead of me. Example: I receive a ticket with the number A95 and the hospital is providing meds for the holder of number A55, then I know that there are 40 ahead of me. I have a perspective of how long it will take for my number to be announced for service.

The VARO, in my hypothesis, could assign a first in, first out (FIFO) number to a C-file so that anytime a veteran inquires, he/she could be advised where they stand in the processing order. For example, Doe, James Q., C-12 45 6789 might receive "processing number" 266 at a particular VARO. The vet could then monitor the progress the claim is making in the system. This procedure could even be incorporated at the VA web site and one could log in to review a VARO's processing list (minus the name) to determine the status of the claim.

The processing procedure could be modified to allowed for delays such as waiting for evidence, etc.

I don't think this procedure would be outrageously expensive.

Just thinking out loud...

Mind reader! Ha, but wait, my claim letters have codes on them. jj5, or something like that on the upper right hand corner! hmm. Could we 'claimants' have access to our information? What a concept.

Thanks Ron, now how can the va be convinced? smiles.

Then they would have to explain their gross incompetence.

Then they would have to explain their gross incompetence.

I started to include a comment about that and forgot. It would definitely show how "active" they are.

Not that anything will come of it, but I just submitted the info to the VA via their website.

The VA does not like to be on a calendar or anything that would give a Veteran some hope about their claim.

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

Ron, it may work for initial claims but something else would have to be installed for appeals. My comment is based upon the fact that they claim to work on the first in concept so just think about all of the remands (quite a few). A vet's number could be coming up next week when all of a sudden the RO gets 200 remands in which on the first in concept would demand that the remands take priority since they would have a lower number. Just a thought and you know I have a lot of them hahahaha!

    • These decisions have made a big impact on how VA disability claims are handled, giving veterans more chances to get benefits and clearing up important issues.

      Service Connection

      Frost v. Shulkin (2017)
This case established that for secondary service connection claims, the primary service-connected disability does not need to be service-connected or diagnosed at the time the secondary condition is incurred 1. This allows veterans to potentially receive secondary service connection for conditions that developed before their primary condition was officially service-connected.

      Saunders v. Wilkie (2018)
The Federal Circuit ruled that pain alone, without an accompanying diagnosed condition, can constitute a disability for VA compensation purposes if it results in functional impairment 1. This overturned previous precedent that required an underlying pathology for pain to be considered a disability.

      Effective Dates

      Martinez v. McDonough (2023)
This case dealt with the denial of an earlier effective date for a total disability rating based on individual unemployability (TDIU) 2. It addressed issues around the validity of appeal withdrawals and the consideration of cognitive impairment in such decisions.

    • I met with a VSO today at my VA Hospital who was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  We decided I should submit a few new claims which we did.  He told me that he didn't need copies of my military records that showed my sick call notations related to any of the claims.  He said that the VA now has entire military medical record on file and would find the record(s) in their own file.  It seemed odd to me as my service dates back to  1981 and spans 34 years through my retirement in 2015.  It sure seemed to make more sense for me to give him copies of my military medical record pages that document the injuries as I'd already had them with me.  He didn't want my copies.  Anyone have any information on this.  Much thanks in advance.

    • Caluza Triangle defines what is necessary for service connection
Caluza Triangle – Caluza vs Brown defined what is necessary for service connection. See COVA– CALUZA V. BROWN–TOTAL RECALL

This has to be MEDICALLY Documented in your records:

Current Diagnosis.   (No diagnosis, no Service Connection.)

      In-Service Event or Aggravation.
Nexus (link- cause and effect- connection) or Doctor’s Statement close to: “The Veteran’s (current diagnosis) is at least as likely due to x Event in military service”
