Question

I received a call today from St Louis. I did as Berta suggested I wrote and ask that they call me so I could tell them specifically what I needed and they sure enough called.. I wanted to know if these particular records that I am seeking(Mental Health Record from Active Duty)are kept in the same area such as the same building with the SMR's or some where's else? He said it would be about 4 or 5 days....Thanks

hate to say it but the last laugh may be on you. The file and papers are property of the u s gov't not yours. But the main point is that if you ever file a serious claim the va is going to come back at you and say they have no record of that treatment or injury or whatever. More than likely even if you produce the original letter they will turn you down because they have no record. Having a original letter of treatment or injury means nothing if the va cannot back it up with other original letters. A file is like a timeline that the va can use to determine what happens what treatment and results. Not that you would, but anyone can type a letter with anything written on it. It has to be verfied by other documents in the possession of the va. At the time the wise thing would have been to make and keep copies of everything in your file and return, now it is going to be hard to explain how you have the only file and why the va should consider all the papers to be originals or first copies.

Good luck
