I was helping a friend file his claim, online, yesterday and noticed that the instructions for date of disablity onset state that if you don't know which day of the month you last worked you should use the "2nd" as the date. By doing this SSDI screws you out of one month of benefits, since benefits start with the first full month after your disability date. I would recommend, when in doubt, you use the "28th" day of the prior month. jmo

PR, thanks for helping your friend. Good tip.

I won in front of an ALJ November 17th, 2008. Do you have any idea how long it takes to start getting paid and how long to get the retro? I suppose every state is different. Thanks. Terry Sturgis

Terry,

I had my hearing on 9/30. Received a Decision Letter on 12/2. Called the Pay Center in Baltimore (410-965-1234) and a very kind person got the ball rolling for me and my back pay will be in the bank next week. Hope this helps.
