Champva Sucks

Question

My 17-yr old son just started seeing a chiropractor for back and neck issues and guess who won't pay for any of it????? Oh yes.....ChampVA. They say it falls under the same category as dental & vision and all the other necessary stuff they won't pay for. They do pay for physical therapy; but won't pay for chiro care....how stupid is that???

Now I have to pay for it. On top of these HUGE oral surgery bills that will start rolling in next week when he begins having his implant surgery done when that other kid knocked his tooth out. And no, the parents have never contacted me and I have no way of contacting them...not even sure I want to fight that or have the energy to do it at this point.

Just add something else to my pile.

Oh.....here's another one. The hospital my son was seen at the night he got hit??? Guess who they billed. The VA. Not ChampVA; but the VA. Idiots. Pure idiots. So my son got a nasty-gram from the fee-based office at the Dayton VA asking for HIS DD214!!! LMAO!! He's a Jr in HS! I've called them 3 times and left msgs and no one will return my call. I called the hospital that did the billing and told them the error of their ways-trying to explain the difference in VA vs ChampVA. Should be easy right? OMG no......who hires these idiots to do hospital billing anyway????

I'm beyond my boiling point folks...

ChampVA is the redheaded step child and almost no one knows who they are. Even when you explain it they say ok copy the insurance card the 800 number an than bill tricare. As far as chiropractor that is really strange cause VA allows that and I know Medicare does also. I would double check. Usually when ChampVA will not pay it is a coding error.

Good Luck

Veterans deserve real choice for their health care.

I just got off the phone with a ChampVA weenie and that's what he told me. I'm still going to check their website.

And sure enough; it's in there as not a covered service.

Now I'm off to write my elected officials.

ChampVA would pay for physical therapy that would cost 10 times as much and not work, but not pay for chiropractic treatment that is so much cheaper and so much more effective. Sure...makes sense to me!!

Idiots.

Not to sound rude but how much do you pay for champva that last time my family used champva it was free. If you do not like it than do not use it I am grateful for what the va has done for me and my family.

ChampVA doesn't pay for witch doctors, either, whom I feel are much the same. Personally I believe they are a fraud but there are those that believe in them. The one I used helped me w/my back. The strain was lightened after each visit as my wallet was lighter and I felt better for about 20 minutes, after each visit. jmo

Wow....the two of you are really supportive and helpful.

First to windycity....do you know what I "pay" for ChampVA? I pay with my freakin' life OK! I'm no longer able to work; not my choice. This is all the insurance I have for my kids.

As to you PR....I've come to expect nothing less....and that's truly sad. I've been seeing this chiro-doc for several months now following a nasty car accident and he has helped me greatly!

What happened to vets helping vets on here??

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

    • Good question.

Maybe I can clear it up.

The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      More here:

      Source:

      https://www.va.gov/disability/dependency-indemnity-compensation/

NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
