Radiculopathy And Neuritis

Question

I believe I have some nerve issues related to my service-connected DDD C6-C7. I have pain from neck to my shoulder and tingling down to my hand. These symptoms have really just onset in the last month...... I have not filed for this yet and am awaiting a proper diagnosis from my phisician. I do believe that it is a result of my DDD and am just waiting for my appointment to get it verified......... I was curious as to how it would be rated. I can not tell by reading the rating schedule because I see nothing listed for radiculopathy and neuritis is listed but without a compensatable rate. Could someone with more experience explain to me how this is rated.......I know that the diaganostic code will depend on the nerve affected.......thanks

Diseases of the Peripheral Nerves

Rating

Schedule of ratings -----------------

Major Minor

The term ``incomplete paralysis,'' with this and other

peripheral nerve injuries, indicates a degree of lost

or impaired function substantially less than the type

picture for complete paralysis given with each nerve,

whether due to varied level of the nerve lesion or to

partial regeneration. When the involvement is wholly

sensory, the rating should be for the mild, or at

most, the moderate degree. The ratings for the

peripheral nerves are for unilateral involvement;

when bilateral, combine with application of the

bilateral factor.

Upper radicular group (fifth and sixth cervicals)

8510 Paralysis of:

Complete; all shoulder and elbow movements lost or 70 60

severely affected, hand and wrist movements not

affected...........................................

Incomplete:

Moderate.......................................... 40 30

Mild.............................................. 20 20

Complete; adduction, abduction and rotation of arm, 70 60

flexion of elbow, and extension of wrist lost or

You need to have a Nerve conductuion study (NCS) and electromeylogram (EMG). These tests determine the severity of your radicular issues.

Thanks for the replies.......I have recently moved and have my first appointment with my primary care physician at the VA clinic at the end of the month.....I'm going to go from there to try to get a referral and have these test done......if not, I will go to a private DR and let my insurance handle it.

Both are needed. The EMG measures the speed the signal travels by shocking the nerves. The ncs measures the latency of the nerves at the effected muscles. it is a very painful test but is the most accurate. It also tells is there are any demylenating issues going on.

    Post a clear title like

Need help preparing PTSD claim or “VA med center won’t schedule my surgery” instead of  ‘I have a question."

This gives members a starting point to ask clarifying questions like “Can you post the Reasons for Denial of your claim?
