    Have Questions? Get Answers.

Tips on posting on the forums.

    1. Post a clear title like ‘Need help preparing PTSD claim’ or “VA med center won’t schedule my surgery instead of ‘I have a question.

    2. Knowledgeable people who don’t have time to read all posts may skip yours if your need isn’t clear in the title.
I don’t read all posts every login and will gravitate towards those I have more info on.

    3. Use paragraphs instead of one massive, rambling introduction or story.

Again – You want to make it easy for others to help. If your question is buried in a monster paragraph, there are fewer who will investigate to dig it out.

    Leading too:

exclamation-point.pngPost straightforward questions and then post background information.

    Examples:

    • Question A. I was previously denied for apnea – Should I refile a claim?
      • Adding Background information in your post will help members understand what information you are looking for so they can assist you in finding it.
Rephrase the question: I was diagnosed with apnea in service and received a CPAP machine, but the claim was denied in 2008. Should I refile?

    • Question B. I may have PTSD- how can I be sure?
      • See how the details below give us a better understanding of what you’re claiming.
Rephrase the question: I was involved in a traumatic incident on base in 1974 and have had nightmares ever since, but I did not go to mental health while enlisted. How can I get help?

This gives members a starting point to ask clarifying questions like “Can you post the Reasons for Denial of your claim?”

You’ve just been rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Affairs. After the excitement of finally having the rating you deserve wears off, you start asking questions. One of the first questions that you might ask is this: It’s a legitimate question – rare is the Veteran that finds themselves sitting on the couch eating bon-bons … Continue reading

Sent In Smr's And Civilian Medical Records

Rich W

Question

I know I'm probably impatient but I sent my SMRs and civilian medical records requested by the VA Regional office about a month ago in support of my claims. I also checked the box on the VA form stating to not wait for any further records to be sent and to go ahead and process my claim. In the past it seemed like I received a confirmation letter or a form letter of some sort within a few weeks after sending them something. I sent the records requiring a signature and got proof they received them but I'm still a little paranoid.

Is there a number I can call to make sure they have them?

Rich W,

I am sure you know the call center # 1-800-827-1000, however they don't know their butt from a hole in the ground...so to speak...probably due to the fact they have a very limited screen to view.(MHO). Be prepared to wait long periods...mths and maybe yr or more depends on regional office, claims ahead of you, staff ratio at your VARO too.

As far as letters received these are computer generated and automatically sent out. Keep warm for the winter while you wait. Good luck.

ditto; however if you want a real answer, use IRIS...if they don't have an answer, they will query the VARO handling your claim. plus, you have a written answer to put in your file

You should be paranoid if you don't have proof they got the records. Now let's hope they read them if they did get them. Sometimes they have evidence and they just ignore it.

Rich, Don't forget that when you request your SMRs from the National Personnel Records Center on an SF 180 that you must make a seperate written request for inpatient hospital records there to a particular address at the National Personnel Records Center.
