Question

My primary care clinic set me up with a sleep study. This Thursday I have the sleep study evaluation. The lady in the sleep study clinic said the evalaution would only take 30 minutes and the actual sleep study would be scheduled later. What does the evaluation entail?

Fire,

A question to you.

Are you under the impression the sleep study will in any way

have something to do with a PTSD diagnosis or evaluation.

I only ask this as how the topic title of this thread is worded.

carlie

Not sure Carlie. When I was having the conversation with my PCP about my anxieties, she asked how was I sleeping. I told her I was losing sleep with the nightmares, and shaking & trembling while sleeping, she then suggested the sleep study. I think since we were discussing PTSD and she recommended a sleep study, I assumed they had some relation. Something is causing me not to get any sleep. I'm a newbie and still learning though.

What's the purpose of a sleep study?

Thanks

In my case the sleep study itself was done at a

Sleep Disorder Clinic connected to a local hospital.

I arrived about 10:30 pm then around 11:30 pm

they put a bunch of glue and wires into my hair at the scalp level.

Then I took my night-night meds and layed there and watched

tv until about 3:30 am.

They woke me up at 5:00 am - took the junk out of my hair

and booted me out. I slept in my car in the parking lot for about 3 hours - woke up and drove home.

Test results - inconclusive - no REM sleep pattern.

jmho,

carlie

Here's additional info regarding what I was told about my upcoming visit:

- Pretty much everything Carlie said about wires glued to your head

- Supposed to show up at 7:30pm

- They turn off the TV and the lights at 10:30pm

- Don't bring your cooler and six-pack

- You must wear shorts and a t-shirt (no thongs)

Vync,

The one I went to we all had a little private room

with our own tv and remote.

Fire,

In my opinion most sleep stidies are done to investigate

sleep apnea or seizure activity.

I have found (on the internet) some sleep studies done for research

on the relationship of PTSD to sleep apnea - but I found nothing

that was shown to be conclusive evidence.

By chance did you and your PCP also discuss any respiratory conditions,

snoring, waking from sleep with shortness of breath, never feeling

rested upon awakening?

Okay. Thanks Carlie. We did discuss me not feeling rested upon awakening and how my eyes are so red in the morninings that I have to use visine daily.

I had my primary care appt about two weeks ago and had my evaluation yesterday. They made me, and about six other dudes, sit through a 20 minute slideshow. The lady measured my neck circumference and looked inside my mouth to see how much room I had in there. I also turned in my questionnaire packet. The actual sleep study was scheduled for about three months from now. They say that if you test positive for OSA, then you get a CPAP machine right away. They also test you for other sleep issues, like restless leg and narcolepsy, etc...

They want the first one done at the hospital (usually contracted out to a local hospital) in a controlled environment. Some folks can do this at home, but usually if they convince their doc that they cannot sleep elsewhere. I am going to try my study at the hospital first. My girlfriend had one done a year ago (not related to the VA) and they actually had her come back for a second study to verify some things.

I had my sleep study evaluation today. They just asked some questions regarding sleep, measured my neck and looked at my throat. I was out of there in about 20 minutes. No film though. She said based on how I answered the questions they will be scheduling me for a sleep study. But it will not be until March or April.

She also explained the process. Carlie was right on with that info.
