Question

I was talking to a Vet friend of mine who gave me some advice when I was filing my claim for PTSD. I told him that I got 50% and he asked me if I thought that was fair. I thought about it and I said that it was ok at the present time in my life. Its not worth the effort or the stress to fight for more. I said if I got 30% I would have fought it.

I said that if I knew about PTSD and filed a claim in the 1980's that I would have gotten at least 70%. I have gotten mellow as I got older. Things still bother me but not like they did 25 years ago. Its an effort today to act right all the time. I know I burned a lot of bridges that can't be repaired with people but thats life. As I think back all the people that hate me or dislike me never went to war.

My wife stuck by me all these years and I will try to be a better husband every day.

Good for you Billy....Congratulations on your award

FYI Billy, if you find you cannot work due to your service connected conditions you should file for TDIU. You definetely meet the minimum requirements with 80% combined rating.

LLB,

My C&P was by a Psych Dr. at the VA.

Initally I called a friend that works as a Vet Officer at a local college. I asked him if he knew anyone at the VA that deals with PTSD.

He gave me the name of someone at the VA and set up an appointment. I was evaluated and given another appointment and refered to the Vet Center. The lady at the VA went over a lot of questions from my childhood to the present. All this info was entered in the computer. I went to the Vet Center every 2 or 3 weeks and talked to a counselor for at least an hour.

I filed a claim in June of 09 and I had started a paper trail in May of 09. I had a C&P in Aug and it lasted about 25 min. It seemed short but it worked. Don't worry about the exam. Read up on PTSD and you will see where you fall as far as ratings.

Good luck and if I can help contact me.

Bill

I think 50% is fair if you are working and are having difficulties that are manageable but still do seriously affect you in a negative way some of the time. But if you can't hold a job or you're beating on people and getting in to fights at bars and not being very social I don't think 50% is fair.

I would think going to bars would be a social component and usually bar fights are fueled by alcohol. :)
