Hypertension Leading To Cad And Cabg

Question

With a 10% rating for hypertension, how hard is it to make a connection to CAD? Also I have had a six way bypass operation. They scheduled a C and P exam two weeks after the operation then cancelled it, but are still working on the new claim. Has anyone else had this happen?

Sorry to hear about your CAD & bypass surgery. I was 0% service connected for hypertension and was diagnosed with CAD in July 09. I had a single bypass operation due to a 99% blockage of my left anterior descending coronary artery. They finished my claim in Feb 10, increasing my hypertension to 10% and granting another 10% for CAD. You should be entitled to 3 months of temporary 100% after your bypass surgery, and possibly Special Monthly Compensation if you have other service connected disabilities totaling 60% or more. The rating for your CAD will depend on the results of your C&P exams. The ejection fraction of your heart plays a key role in the rating. They also found scarring in my lung tissue (which I didn't even claim), and they rated me 0% for that with more C&P exams pending to evaluate that condition. It's a long process, and the C&P exams were grueling since it was so soon after my surgery -- but to answer your question, it's pretty much automatic for the connection of CAD secondary to service connected hypertension. I assume you filed all of your surgery documentation and medical evidence with your claim?

Hypertension is a precurser to CAD. You will have little problems getting it connected.

A Veteran is a person who served this country. Treat them with respect.

A Disabled Veteran is a person who served this country and bears the scars of that service regardless of when or where they served.

Treat them with the upmost respect. I do. Rejection is not a sign of failure. Failure is not an option, Medical opinions and evidence wins claims. Trust in others is a virtue but you take the T out of Trust and you are left with Rust so be wise about who you are dealing with.

Thanks very much for the reply. Yes, I submitted the operation report, the nuclear stress test, and the heart cath results. The strange thing about the C and P exam in this case is this. They scheduled it January 26th, two weeks after the six way bypass January 12th. The day before the exam, the regional office in Louisville cancelled the exam because of the records that I had sent in. The case is still under full consideration. I do not know what to make of the cancellation, if it means they are going to leave me at 10% for hypertension, or if I am in such bad shape they do not need an exam, or if they are going to schedule it later. I have no idea. I am getting better some two months after surgery, but still cannot do things like heavy lifting and push mowing the yard. I also have no idea what type of percentage I will end up with if any. The four diagnosises are hypertension, hypothyroidism, CAD, and hyperlipemia.

No they will most likely give you a 100 percent temporary rating then wait 6 months and re evaluate it. That is what they should do. If not let me know as I am a fellow Kentuckian.

I recently filed a similar claim for CAD secondary to SC hypertension. The connection was established, but per the rating schedule, the temporary 100 percent for coronary bypass surgery was only for 3 months. Thereafter, they determined a rating of 10% based on the findings of my C&P exams. They also increased my hypertension rating. The claim was completed in about 8-9 months. Be careful though, because they shorted me 1 month of temp 100%...the effective date of your claim should be the date of your heart surgery, not the date the VA received your claim.

My prayers are with you Saturneptune...this must be a lot to deal with so soon after your heart surgery.

Your correct AIM. I just glanced at the reg and I saw the 100 percent note for 6 months just above t he reg and I realized it was for Valve replacement.

    • VA has gotten away with (mis) interpreting their  ambigious, , vague regulations, then enforcing them willy nilly never in Veterans favor.

They justify all this to congress by calling themselves a "pro claimant Veteran friendly organization" who grants the benefit of the doubt to Veterans.

      This is not true,

      Proof:

About 80-90 percent of Veterans are initially denied by VA, pushing us into a massive backlog of appeals, or worse, sending impoverished Veterans "to the homeless streets" because  when they cant work, they can not keep their home.  I was one of those Veterans who they denied for a bogus reason:  "Its been too long since military service".  This is bogus because its not one of the criteria for service connection, but simply made up by VA.  And, I was a homeless Vet, albeit a short time,  mostly due to the kindness of strangers and friends.

Hadit would not be necessary if, indeed, VA gave Veterans the benefit of the doubt, and processed our claims efficiently and paid us promptly.  The VA is broken.

A huge percentage (nearly 100 percent) of Veterans who do get 100 percent, do so only after lengthy appeals.  I have answered questions for thousands of Veterans, and can only name ONE person who got their benefits correct on the first Regional Office decision.  All of the rest of us pretty much had lengthy frustrating appeals, mostly having to appeal multiple multiple times like I did.

I wish I know how VA gets away with lying to congress about how "VA is a claimant friendly system, where the Veteran is given the benefit of the doubt".   Then how come so many Veterans are homeless, and how come 22 Veterans take their life each day?  Va likes to blame the Veterans, not their system.
    • Welcome to hadit!

There are certain rules about community care reimbursement, and I have no idea if you met them or not.  Try reading this:

      https://www.va.gov/resources/getting-emergency-care-at-non-va-facilities/

However, (and I have no idea of knowing whether or not you would likely succeed) Im unsure of why you seem to be so adamant against getting an increase in disability compensation.

When I buy stuff, say at Kroger, or pay bills, I have never had anyone say, "Wait!  Is this money from disability compensation, or did you earn it working at a regular job?"  Not once.  Thus, if you did get an increase, likely you would have no trouble paying this with the increase compensation.

However, there are many false rumors out there that suggest if you apply for an increase, the VA will reduce your benefits instead.

That rumor is false but I do hear people tell Veterans that a lot.  There are strict rules VA has to reduce you and, NOT ONE of those rules have anything to do with applying for an increase.

Yes, the VA can reduce your benefits, but generally only when your condition has "actually improved" under ordinary conditions of life.

Unless you contacted the VA within 72 hours of your medical treatment, you may not be eligible for reimbursement, or at least that is how I read the link, I posted above. Here are SOME of the rules the VA must comply with in order to reduce your compensation benefits:

    • Good question.

Maybe I can clear it up.

The spouse is eligible for DIC if you die of a SC condition OR any condition if you are P and T for 10 years or more.  (my paraphrase).

      More here:

      Source:

      https://www.va.gov/disability/dependency-indemnity-compensation/

NOTE:   TO PROVE CAUSE OF DEATH WILL LIKELY REQUIRE AN AUTOPSY.  This means if you die of a SC condtion, your spouse would need to do an autopsy to prove cause of death to be from a SC condtiond.    If you were P and T for 10 full years, then the cause of death may not matter so much.
