Question

Saw the new psychiatrist, got the records today. My diagnosis is

PTSD, unstable

Depression, unstable

MST

My diagnosis from the former psychiatrist was

PTSD, chronic

MDD, chronic

OCD

MST

What does it mean, 'unstable'? I've not seen that in my records before, not in the dx, anyway.

I'll start by emphasizing that they're talking about your condition, not you. Speaking only for me, it's hard not to take certain terms personally when I see them in a diagnosis.

In this context, stable or unstable refers to your PTSD symptoms and their severity. If Jane has PTSD but her symptoms are well-managed and her scores on assessments are consistent, Jane's PTSD symptoms are stable. If John's symptoms are not well-managed, his assessment scores are all over the map, and his day-to-day functioning varies widely, John's PTSD symptoms are unstable.

It lets your clinicians (and rating officials, should you file for a rating or increase) know that these conditions are sufficiently severe that their symptoms are not controlled from day to day.
