Man Sentenced To Prison In VA Hospital Threat

BENTON, Ill. (AP) ― An Army veteran who threatened a shooting rampage last year at a southern Illinois Veterans Affairs hospital has been ordered to spend a year and a day in federal prison.

A judge also sentenced 30-year-old Mark Harmon of Shawneetown on Monday to three years of supervised release after his prison term. Harmon pleaded guilty in January to attempted possession of a firearm on federal property with the intent to commit a crime. Police at the VA hospital in Marion arrested Harmon last October after he told a nurse by telephone that he was armed and was "going to fill that place with lead." Prosecutors say authorities found a loaded semiautomatic handgun, a magazine filled with 13 bullets and 13 loose rounds of ammunition in Harmon's truck.

One must also have to realize that even though the VA does have its delays and issues, A Veteran cannot threaten employees ir break the law. They will go to jail.

While the Veteran is in Jail, The VA pays no comp, SSDI also cuts off the benefits as well.

The main thing to consider is this: Keep your head level and dont do something stupid. Once you get characterized as menacing, They hold the cards, Not the Vet.

What we have to fear is the crazy vet who does not warn the VA in advance, but just walks in with a gun and starts shooting. I think it is bound to happen. I have no confidence that VA cops I see would be able to stop someone on a mission to kill. Even you even raise your voice at my VAMC you are apt to get sprayed and beaten.
