Buddy Statement From An Active Duty Commissioned Officer?

Rate this question

Mark C

Question

Greetings everybody, I was in the process of getting verification for a stressor incident.

2 years of trying and Navpers does not respond to my request, but I was able to find and get hold of a former member of my unit that was an eyewitness to the incident.

This fellow had stayed in the service and is now a very high ranking officer, still on active duty.

He has written a very good statement verifying the incident, does this settle the issue?

I guess what I'm asking is a sworn statement from an active duty comissioned officer count as verification from a federal source?

Thx in advance...

Mark C,

No it does not settle the issue - it just gives the VA more to go on.

They will (are supposed to) do additional development such as

verify that you and this person served together, at the same time and

location that the event took place, etc...

His rank may not be as relevant as one would think.

So, the VA doesn't believe the word of an active duty Lieutenant Colonel?

Who do they consider trustworthy?

I did have a buddy letter that was used as evidence by the Judge at the BVA.

Do make sure your Buddy places his or her service number on the letter for verification.

It does not matter what the rank of the individual is. The regulation only states that the evidence must be credible.

I certainly think they'll consider his statement more credible, than say my statement, but they may still try to verify.
