Tips on posting on the forums.

    1. Post a clear title like ‘Need help preparing PTSD claim’ or “VA med center won’t schedule my surgery instead of ‘I have a question.

    2. Knowledgeable people who don’t have time to read all posts may skip yours if your need isn’t clear in the title.
I don’t read all posts every login and will gravitate towards those I have more info on.

    3. Use paragraphs instead of one massive, rambling introduction or story.

Again – You want to make it easy for others to help. If your question is buried in a monster paragraph, there are fewer who will investigate to dig it out.

    Leading too:

exclamation-point.pngPost straightforward questions and then post background information.

    Examples:

    • Question A. I was previously denied for apnea – Should I refile a claim?
      • Adding Background information in your post will help members understand what information you are looking for so they can assist you in finding it.
Rephrase the question: I was diagnosed with apnea in service and received a CPAP machine, but the claim was denied in 2008. Should I refile?

    • Question B. I may have PTSD- how can I be sure?
      • See how the details below give us a better understanding of what you’re claiming.
Rephrase the question: I was involved in a traumatic incident on base in 1974 and have had nightmares ever since, but I did not go to mental health while enlisted. How can I get help?

This gives members a starting point to ask clarifying questions like “Can you post the Reasons for Denial of your claim?”

Sleep Apnea

Computer Tech

Question

Last month I had a sleep study done and I was dx'd with sleep apnea. They told me that I need a CPAP machine. I got a letter from my insurance company telling me that my policy doesn't provide durable medical equipment and if I want the machine I have to pay for it myself. My question is will the VA provide me with a CPAP machine? If so how do I go about getting one or do I need to do another sleep study?

Thanks

Rick

Does the sleep apnea have to be service connected? I have sleep apnea too.

The sleep apnea does not need to be service connected to get a cpap machine. You will have to contact sleep medicine and see if they will accept you private sleep study report, they might or they might one to give you a sleep study also.

I am 100% P&T and not SC'ed for sleep apnea, but I was issued a CPAP machine after my sleep study. I have heard it takes longer to get the CPAP machine from some VAMCs than others.

Thanks for all of the replies. I''m supposed to go in to see my PCP this month and I'll bring up my sleeping problems. The lady that takes care of the issuance where I retired from says that they should give me the machine and that she'll look into it. It just amazes me that my medical insurrance will spend $500 on diabetic shoes for me but won't spend a dime on a machine to ensure that I wake up in the morning.

I'm 100%, P&T, over 20 yrs, was diagnosed w/sleep apnea on 11/7/2010 and am still waiting for my CPAP machine. They'd rather I die!

Yikes, Philip!

I told them (private insurance) that I was falling asleep in traffic, which was true, and got one within a couple days.

Wonder if VA would speed things up if you had "almost got in an accident"...

Light a fire under their butts.
