Nehmer Survivor

Question

Somewhere here I mentioned the Nehmer letter I received as a widow of AO vet.

This requires a re opening of Letters of Administration or re opening of the Estate Account for the deceased veteran.

Since Nehmer is Class Action the VA will ask you for this info as any retro payment they make under Nehmer to any survivor is an estate asset.

I was able to handle this by mail with the Surrogate's office to re-open my Letters of Administration but I also needed my notarized signature on 2 documents to send with the info.

When they asked for reason for L of A reopen- I referred them to an enclosed copy of the Nehmer letter from VA which I received.

If you instead opened an Estate account for the deceased veteran, the bank which held the account can help with what you need to do in that regard as to letters of testamentary.

Best not to do anything until the Nehmer letter comes asking for this info (except finding the past paperwork if you have it)

as the VA letter itself will warrant the re -open.
