How Do I Get Meds Through Va From Street Docs?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

If I get really sick from something that is not sc'd and a civilian doc gives me a prescription for an expensive medication, how do I get the prescription filled by the VA??

I have part A and B Medicare with a supplement.

Thanks

Most of the expensive stuff is not on VA Formulary. However, there are steps that can be taken to get the med you need. Start with your PCP

Get your medical records from your outside dr and go in to your va doctor can review and hopefully concur and prescribe, otherwise you may have to take records through triage at va and see if they will review and write prescription. Also if they don't have the drug or one like it they may be able to do a formulary request and get the drug for you. Jmho

My PCP told me to fax the script in to start the process. He requests the script, but if it's something normally prescribed by a specialty clinic, he sends the request over to that particular doc. I've only had one issue in getting a script filled since 2004, and I have 27 active.
