Champva Effective Date

Rate this question

Question

I received my T&P IU April 5. I filed an application for my Wife to receive ChampVa benefits a couple days later by mail. On April 23 I had to take my wife to ER for what she thought was a heart attack. It turned out to not be but I was wondering if this visit could be paid by Champva retroactively if she qualifies and is accepted into the Champva program. Does the elgibility start when I received the 100% T&P award or when her application is approved?

Good question. Im fairly certain you will be covered. You see, Champva effective date is established by the date your disabilities became effective in your RO decision.

One example of this:

You have applied for an increase, and have to pay copayments on prescriptions. You finally get your increase and no longer have a copayment. You can go back to your VA and ask those copayments be refunded back to your effective date of increase.

ChampVA will be retro back to the date that you were P&T. Most likely when you file, I recieve mine P&T in January 8th 2012 , but ChampVA went back to the date I filed April 16, 2010. They say it will takes a couple days to get your package from ChampVA, it closer to 2-3 weeks, You can call in and get the card numbers to make claim.

ChampVA has worked pretty good for my wife. She knows how to talk to them. She laughs and jokes with them and gets exactly what she wants. I get mad and curse them and they hang up, so she does all the talking now. Not all doctors take "Assignment" for ChampVA but most will file the paperwork at least. ChampVA has worked well with BC/BS and I know it works with medicare. It really is gold and we have to fight to keep it. I can see it on the chopping block one day.
