If you are mobidly obese and have DMII, High blood, or any heart disease then I would go outside the VA for an opinion. I would not go with just one opinion. All these surgeries have risks. Being morbidly obese has risks as well. This is not for someone who wants to drop 25lbs.I am obese myself now, but not morbidly obese to the extent I would risk surgery.

Most bariatric surgeons will NOT do a gastric bypass UNLESS you meet ALL of the following qualifications:

1. You are at least 100 pounds overweight.

2. You have tried, unsuccessfully, a PHYSICIAN supervised and documented weight loss program for at least ONE year.

If you can lose weight by other means, they wont do surgery.

I have since learned that you must join the MOVE program. And then you must show that you lost 20 percent of your body weight on the MOVE program.

So far, I have only gained ten or so pounds on the MOVE Program. LOL...
