Attempting To Start A Business. Tdiu Procedure?

Question

Hey, ya'll. I've had it.

First off, I'm going to try and start a business (real estate). I am currently 90% plus TDIU, SSDI, and FERS retirement. Please advise. DO NOT advise me not to do this! I am looking for the procedure to follow. I read about SSD ticket to work program. Does the VA have anything similar?

Second, if you pray to Jesus, please pray for me. I have been down and out since 2006, but want to give it a go before throwing in the towel for life. Pray I succeed, and can have meaning to life. It may start out as not substantial employment, but will hopefully one day transition into making a living to support my family.

Finally, you may ask why? For a couple reasons. For those of you who will never have the opportunity to work again. For my children (6,2), so they can learn that Daddy has to work for a living. Finally, for me. I must give it one last shot.

Again, please don't respond with all the usual, "You worked so hard to get IU, why throw it away." I just want to know if there is a procedure for this, or a ticket to work program. Any sort of grace period?

Thank you for your time and prayers.

You can. Let the VA know what you intend to do. They "shouldn't" reduce you until you are shown to be successful, about one yr. Your spouse could work and you could be a stay at home dad and take care of the kids but that might be too hard for you. jmo

VA does not have a program like ticket to work, However, If you are able to start a real estate business then you do not need (IU).

is awarded because your service connected disabilities keep you from working.

Hope it works out for you.

Good advice listed above! I know how you feel bud. I have two kids 8/6 and I want them to learn the Value of hard work. I have 3 degrees, and due to my Health, will probably never use them. If you want to work, I totally support that, but just remember that all you went thru with the Military, SSA, and VA will essentially be gone if you go to work. My SSDI just got approved 2 weeks ago, after only 4 months. I have been thru a lot in the last 10 years in the Military, and I don't want to see you bust your butt to start the new business, and lets say that it fails, and you lose all your Govt pensions, then you will be in no better shape then before you acquired your disabilities. Just think long and hard bud, and you do whatever is best for your family. God Bless and good luck. Keep us posted

How old are you? This is a factor. I am in the same situation as you except I am 64 years old. I support my wife and myself with TDIU, SSDI and OPM. My wife gets SSA as well. If you are over 40 years of age consider well what you are risking. I think self employment is the way to go for disabled. If you could work it so your wife has the business in her name while you do the work. I retired at 51 and I hated it really. However, now it is not so bad.

Thanks all for the advice. John, I am only 33 yo. I cannot handle the idea that I will be sitting around at the mercy of the VA sending me letters and proposals to reduce every couple of years. I fully understand the risks attempting to start a business. I wish I could talk my wife into getting her license so she could make all the money while I work, but she is too busy homeschooling the kids.

Do I simply call the 800 #? I do not yet know if I am well enough to work, but am willing to die trying. If I don't make it, hopefully the VA will help me out.

Thanks again.

Joe
