At the time my husband was at 50%, I had additional claims I was filing for him. I felt at the time that if he got approval for these claims that he could possibly be eligible for IU, so I requested from the beginning that he be reviewed for IU. Didn't know what would happen, but I thought it couldn't hurt. I also felt that his claims would have to decided first, then they would have to look at IU. If he got the required percentages needed for IU, then it would be possible that they would go ahead and give him the IU. Well, after getting the approvals for some of his claims, he was sent the IU form to fill out. We did and sent it back. After all of his claims were decided, he got the IU and it was backdated.

So, I guess what I am saying is that it can never hurt to ask to be reviewed for IU, regardless of what your percentages are. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
