A retro award means that the SC'd condition existed for the period covered by the retro. The various periods mentioned such as the 20 year limit would include the time covered by the retro.

I agree with Chuck 75. It is my understanding the 5 year, 10 year and 20 year thresholds start on the effective date of your award and not the date you received notification of the award. JMO

georgiapapa/Chuck are correct. The clock starts with the effective date. If you have several different conditions with ratings with different effective date, you will have several "clocks" running. The effective date of each rating would start the clock for that rating and only that rating. For example, a 25 year old 100% SC rating is completely protected (except for fraud) but if the vet gets a new 60% rating including a 100% + 60% SMC award this year, the new award/rating including the SMC does NOT inherit the original protections of the 25 year old.
