About the Program

Many Veterans will now have the option to receive non-VA health care rather than waiting for a VA appointment or traveling to a VA facility.

Beginning November 5, 2014, the new Choice Program will begin to cover non-VA care for eligible Veterans enrolled in VA healthcare. Veterans are eligible if any of these situations apply to you:

You have been told by your local VA medical facility that you will need to wait more than 30 days from your preferred date or the date medically determined by your physician

Your current residence is more than 40 miles from the closest VA health care facility

You need to travel by plane or boat to the VA medical facility closest to your home

You face a geographic challenge, such as extensive distances around water or other geologic formations, such as mountains, which presents a significant travel hardship

I had Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation surgery. It is being done at the VA in some places. It is expensive so maybe the VA will drag their feet.

Sure wish I could have it but I see two issues for me. One, it says no MRI and I have MRI annually due to a brain tumor and two, I have a mechanical heart valve. I hate having to take CPAP and oxygen concentrator whenever I travel. It's particularly a pain when flying with both and my husband's motorized chair.

The only thing about being dependent on VA Health care is the waiting for the appointments & even if the dentist clinic says I can go outside the VA >..> It scares me about who will pay the bill?

Private Dentist around here are very expensive 50% would be way to high for us to pay right now...My spouse has that Met-life Insurance through champVA and she still ends up paying a lot although Met-life covers some of it but what they don't cover the dentist don't let her know until the work has be done....and that's pisses us off to no end.

I am hoping that the new VA Sec Robert ''BOB'' McDonald will get these long awaited appointments stopped and appointments be made in a more sensible and timely effort for all veterans and all clinics.

UPDATE: I was told that on my next visit to my VAMC, to ask for new ACTIVE referrals to the providers I want to see. Then, tell the requestor that I am a "40-miler". I plan to do this as I am having some rheumatic issues/flare-ups. I'll post the results of the request.

they are supposed to print you out a treatment plan. The basic plan isnt very good, you need the 42.00 a month plan.
