Ebenefits Hacked?

Rate this question

lueharbin

Question

I did not get paid on May 1 because my direct deposit had been fraudlently changed on ebenefits. Has this happened to anyone else and how long before the VA fraud department authorized the money back to your correct account? Customer service at VA says it could be at least a month before I even hear from them. This is unacceptable!!

I tried to register with e benefit's and use the 9 figures letters and numbers and upper&lower case  but it always says my password is error  so I said f*** it.

I use myhealthvet to check my appointments and Notes ect,,ect,,..my spouse refills my scripts by phone

I just filed '' intent to file'' claim month or so ago to the Janesville claims intake center &. notice they got the claim  notice, just waiting on them to send me a letter as to what to do next, I used snail mail for my first claim...and I'm in no hurry  .so I just use the Post Office with return sign receipts.

Heads up out there: for me It started back in APRIL/MAY 2015 and am just finding out that my E-benefits account was compromised, the e mail address was changed , password was changed , challenge questions to access my account were changed and my VA disability funds were diverted to an account with "GREEN DOT BANK" .  I believe this was not a random mistake/glitches since it appears the perp was logging in to my account mostly at the end and middle of the month since MAY up to the present. my VA compensation is relatively small so I don't check my account very often ( its supposed to be secure right?)  and didn't take notice until I enrolled in a class and my GI bill payment didn't come in this month..

Depending on the exact circumstances, you need to be concerned with what is on the computer you used.

Many times, malware gets installed without the user's knowledge.  It can capture log in information, and send it to who knows where.

The first indication may be such things as changed login info to a web server, or fradulent financial transactions.

Usually, to get past various firewalls, it turns out that the user had somehow given an opening, and it was taken to install something on the user's computer.

Even worse, the malware can replicate itself, and be difficult to completely remove.

my direct deposit was hacked ,I receive a letter from the VA stated that i've change my bank routing , but I never did request a change so I  called the VA 800-827 -1000 and let them know I've never ask to change this ,I had my direct deposit for more than 15 yrs, I live from my VA check to support my family, now I'm here waiting for the fraud division to call me to let me know if I'm getting paid when and how quickly, so the mean time my bills stay un paid .there has to be a way they inform us about this changes before they change payroll information. Now I'm hoping my money comes to my bank account very soon.

In my opinion, you probably have a "key logger" on your computer.  A key logger is basically a "super virus" which allows the hacker to see every word you ever typed including passwords.

You probably have, or will have other things hacked, too.  As far as VA goes, I certainly cant undo what has been done, but you need to make sure it does not happen again.

Here is what I would do:

1.  Completely reformat the hard drive in that computer.  This means deleting everything.  I would not count on Malware scanners, tho some of those are good, I would delete it all.  I do that anyway, about once every 2 years or so.

2.  Contact your bank, tell them what happened, and ask that your account information only be changed IN PERSON, not over the phone, not online, but in person.  Reason:  The hacker probably has all your passwords and your "secret words", too, such as your mother's maiden name, your favorite sports team, etc. etc.

3.  I recommend using extreme caution with your computer in the future.  I dont recommend ever visiting "gaming" websites, porn websites, "dark web" websites, or casino websites.  All those have reputations for being a hotbed for hackers.

4.   For me, I also "got rid" of Windows, and I exclusively use either Apple or Linux.  I have zero Windows computers, they are a hackers magnet.  Linux is a free operating system, and there are many Linux flavors.  I use Linux Mint, but there are other good Linux flavors and I may try a new flavor next time, probably MX Linux.  https://distrowatch.com/

You can download one of these free operating systems, or order a CD or jump drive with this system on it for 5 bucks or so.  I usually just download my own.  Downloading an operating system takes a while, probably several hours.  Then burn a DVD and load the OS.  Incredibly, you can even "try" a Linux operating system without installing.  It will run off your DVD drive.  Then you can decide if you want to install.  Of course, the OS runs slower on your optical (DVD drive).  This isnt the fault of the operating system, its because DVD drives are slower than hard drives.  Its just to test it out.
