The VA hospital I go to only offers Viagra (4 pills) I would rather Cialis but they don't offer it there. I have seen vets on the internet that claim they receive cialis from the VA. The latest VA formulary http://www.pbm.va.gov/nationalformulary.asp doesn't have CIalis (tadalafil) listed, it does however have Viagra (sildenafil) listed . I just got my private doctor to give me a 30 day supply (5mg cialis 30 pills) but wouldn't give me any refills because he says since I'm now exclusively being treated at the VA he wouldn't help me out with further refills. Does anyone have any information? Can my VA doctor give me a prescription for a non VA pharmacy or do I need to go to a different VA hospital? And does the VA even prescribe Cialis or is that an urban legend? Thank you

Don't count on getting it from your VAMC primary care doc because they are only allowed to prescribe Viagra. Ask for a referral to a urology. They can prescribe Levitra and Cialis. If your VAMC is able to furnish it as a non-formulary medication, expect just a few pills per month, just like the Viagra. If they are unable to furnish it, ask them to write you a prescription to get it filled at an outside pharmacy. You'll be able to get more than a few pills per month, but the cost will be out of your pocket.

If you have not done this yet, if you feel the ED issues are caused by SC conditions, consider filing for SMC-K, which is about an extra $100 a month.

You need to remember VA is NOT a "unified body", but many different parts which can interpret regulations in vastly differnt ways.  People often say, "what does the VA do in xy circumstance?"

The answer almost always varies with who you talk to and ask.

So, if you dont like the answer VA employee "Y" gave you, then ask VA employee "B" who may well provide an answer that is satisfactory to you.   In other words, let the VA's "right hand does not know what the left hand is doing" work in your favor.

So, if you got an unsatisfactory answer, go to a different VAMC, or try to make an appointement with a different VA doc, and, you can tell him you "had concerns" about Dr. B (who probably is no longer there, because VA has huge turnover), and want his opinion on this issue.  (You can check your medical record, and if Dr. B, did not mention your question about Cialis, then you dont need to with Dr. C either)

Maybe, maybe not. In order for a Vet to get a non VA formulary RX, VA PC Dr or actual VA treating Specialist need to request the non VA formulary RX.

Not as simple as it sounds. The VA Dr must request the non VA RX based on the Vet's adverse reactions to the Formulary RX. Last time I checked, VA thought a Vet should only get laid 4 times (dependent upon recuperative powers) a month, dispenses (2) Viagra 100mg to be split in half.

If your VA Urologist agreed to write an RX based on the actual Medical need, due to adverse  side effects of Viagra, probably a good chance. Your certainly not going to get 30 pills.

If you really need 30 pills, YOU The MAN!!!!!!

Gastone,
You are completely correct. When Singulair came out, I got it from a private doc and paid a premium for it. My VA PCP had to refer me to the specialist. The specialist then started me on the cheapest meds and it took a lot of subsequent visits and medications changes. The VAMC pharmacy said I had to try medication X before I could be bumped up to medication Y. It took a while, but they did finally get me on Singualair. When it became available as a generic, they relaxed the hurdles.

Also, trying to split a Viagra pill in half is a total joke. It's practically impossible to get it or Cialis to split perfectly due to the shape of the pills. I read here a while back about complaints about how the VA is trying to cut costs by forcing pill splitting and the inaccurate split dosage could actually place patients at risks.

Hehe, 30 pills, indeed! lol

I use a pill splitter on a cpl of my meds, never had a real problem, even with the V. I buy a new splitter every couple months, pretty cheap. Must be pretty accurate on the V, never had to go to the Emergency Room with a 4+ hr erection problem.

Marine0816, like I said, needing 30 pills; YOU THE MAN. I've heard that some women, not mine of course, actually dislike their men having too great of access to V or C.
