IU and SSDI Journey

Rate this question

Question

I saw in Myhealthevet where my PCP added the info I requested. I am hoping this is good to go in regards to IU? (as well as treatment notes, of course):

Patient is a 47 year old male here for follow up his PTSD, OSA and migraine headaches -reviewed chart and interviewed patient, he is unable to maintain gainful employment due to his PTSD. He avoids crowds, is easily distracted in working environment and difficulty with conflict and stress. Has been unable to hold down jobs. Currently on temporary leave in an effort to get needed treatment initiated. Wrote letter stating that he continues to be unable to work. His PTSD is directly related to his time in the service as a medic. - migraine/headaches worse, excerbated by stress, PTSD symptoms and poor sleep associated with obstructive sleep apnea. MRI brain pending for later this week to further evaluate. -

Has been seen by outside pulmonary sleep specialist for his obstructive sleep apnea. Notes that OSA is known to exacerbate PTSD symptoms

ACTIVE PROBLEM
Depression
Headache
Anxiety
Posttraumatic stress disorder
Tear of meniscus of knee
retinal detachment
Obstructive sleep apnea of adult

PTSD: patient involved in intensive treatment plan, followed by pharmacy for medication adjustment, has been seen by a counselor and is in group therapy - he is unable to maintain gainful employment due to his service related PTSD - currently on short term disability and leave from work, will readdress at next visit in March but it is unlikely that he will capable of returning to work environment.

My LCSW (PTSD counselor) has stated she is going to put something in notes as well, along these lines?
Any thoughts on how this looks for me for IU?

Corpsman8404. I would definitely let an experienced disability attorney handle the SSDI. Social Security plays games in a lot of cases. Sometimes if you're under 50, they'll deny you for general purpose. This is one shot one kill territory. I was denied and I hired Bender & Bender solely on their reputation of winning cases. So right now I'm waiting on a court date to appear in front of an SS Admin Law Judge. Social Security will send you to see one of their doctors all the while having your VA file. Just because the VA says your disabled, the SSA says different. Their doctor is going to determine that you can work. So do not go to that appointment alone, they observe you from the time that you enter into their presence. Get someone to fill out your paperwork while you're there. Remember "One Shot One Kill". Also your PTSD SC needs to be up around the 70 or 100% level which shows a social impairment of school, work and family. This shows that you can't work.

SSDI APPROVED First Time !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put in for SSDI a month ago (05Apr?) and have been checking it everyday, of course.  Finally today, I see it said a decision has been made and that they will mail me the decision.  I just looked at the SSDI site in "payments" and it showed the Benefit Verification Letter:
--You are entitled to monthly disability benefits.
--Beginning June 2016, the full monthly Social Security benefit before any deductions is $x,xxx.40

Thank you everyone, for your help.  Now on to the next hill....IU

GREAT...Make sure the VA is aware of this SSDI award....I assume it is  solely  for your PTSD.....

They could make an award  however based on the Voc Rehab denial as well...

Geez, it took SSA only mere months to award my husband SSDI solely for PTSD (it was based on a reconsideration as they had initially awarded him solely for a 1151 stroke) and the SSA had the exact same medical records etc etc on his PTSD that the VA was still farting around with.

He died before he even knew the VA grated him a posthumous 100% P & T PTSD award.

The VA had said SSA refused to release his SSDI records to them. They told my Congressman and two Senators here in NY that too.

It was a boldfaced VA LIE. They had never even sent SSA the authorization form for them and could have awarded this claim in my husband's lifetime.

The 1151 stroke claim was awarded in 2012 by VA. It was part of a three part CUE claim.3 separate awards.18 years after he died.

bastards

Thanks Berta! (so happy it worked out for you eventually)

I have an "intent to file" in the system that is asking for an increase on PTSD along with IU.  Going to add the SA secondary to PTSD into it, headaches, et cetera.

So I have the Sleep Dr stating "More than likely", the Voc Rehab "denial", my VA PCP stating "unable to maintain gainful...", and the SSDI approval.

(The issue is, I can't add docs and finish the IU part on E-bennies until I suppose I RESIGN from work, since I was on STD and now on FMLA).  Was told by some that being on STD/FMLA was the same as "working" and would be detrimental to applying for IU, so I did SSDI first.

Update, and question again.

So today, officially resigned.  So no longer on FMLA.  About to finish my "intent to file" for the IU section, was just waiting on my SSDI approval (approved) and my resignation (done).

Here comes the IU journey.  Any advice?
