TBI/PTSD info-these are 2 separate disabilities

and more info here on that in this forum

PTSD- mental health issue due to emotional  trauma

TBI-physical brain injury due to physical trauma

One cannot get a TBI from having PTSD.

If a vet has a TBI however, the situation that caused it could certainly also cause PTSD.

Update: I have now gone through two mental evaluations one for PTSD and one for other then PTSD. Both separated my symptoms, both separated my TBI PTSD. One of them dx with an chronic Adjustment disorder the other said that she was looking at my PTSD and not the AD. The TBI review said she wouldn't dx me with PTSD but also included the chronic AD was comorbid and exacerbated by my TBI. So  nervously awaiting my exam results for the outcome but sounds like one or the other is getting lumped in with my TBI. All these exams were for an intial for my Chronic AD.

We All we know how the VA Rates PTSD. (  severity of symptoms)

Rating a TBI is harder for the rater, Normally a Dr needs to state his Condition was caused by TBI.

Raters are having a Hard time rating a TBI...from the conditions  a TBI can cause

As I understand  the TBI Rating they rate the severity of his condition the TBI Caused ( A Specialist Dr needs to say what condition the TBI caused)  &  is condition severe ,to moderate severe, to very severe.

Different TBI's can cause different conditions depending on the TBI its self as to what condition it will cause.

So yes they do rate PTSD & TBI separately, But keep in mind the Veteran needs a Dr to Opine that his condition was caused by the TBI.

Dr will need to read his military service records VA Dr & Private

Usually from service records hospital medical records and of course Unit service records location Approx time and date the TBI Occurred.

TBI is not given a single rating, but is rated on the severity of all the conditions and symptoms that it causes.

How they decide between  the two? TBI vs PTSD

I would think BY the veterans lay statement and through service records & medical records & the ''conditions'' the TBI Caused

Sorry so late with the update but they decided to  drop my IU and make my TBI 100% scheduler with PTSD listed as a symptom which they also dx me with a neuro cognitive disorder post traumatic headaches and insomnia. All under my rating for TBI. The fight goes on for the VA denying my skull fractures that is until I am waiting on the BVA where I submitted the ER trauma notes from the. Hospital where I was laid out in the coma diagnosed me with the skull fractures  not just one time but over a three week period they check on the fracture and took extra. Precautions because off the location. I was then left with the arachnoid cyst still seen in my recent MRI... just a matter of time before I’m just seeking service connection

Jfrei

If you have 100 percent schedular, then persuing additional service connections are likely to be "moot" except to the extent you get SMC.

For example, if you are 100 percent plus an additional combined 60 percent, seperate and distinct, then you get statuatory SMC S housebound, worth about another 349 per montho or so.

broncovet

I believe he already has the SMC-S?

He has been rating for all  symptoms from his TBI,= IU Droped

Quote from jfrei

''Sorry so late with the update but they decided to  drop my IU and make my TBI 100% scheduler with PTSD listed as a symptom which they also dx me with a neuro cognitive disorder post traumatic headaches and insomnia. All under my ratting for TBI.''

Now if he has another condition not in consistent with the TBI it will be a separate and distinct rating  if its 60% or higher then the SMC -S is mandatory.

I was thinking jfrei already has that?  to =SMC S
