Question

I have a friend that had to quit her job to take care of her elder parents  for several years. Both have passed on so now she would like to find a job in which she could take care of elders.  She is not a nurse, just wants to use the skills she earned by taking care of her parents.

There are many paths to employment in this area, depending upon skill level.

One idea, of course, is to complete nurses training.  Probably the most profitable and in demand.

2. Another is to become a certified nurses aide.  This is done by your state.  Most states there is a few weeks training, then often nursing homes will hire you and some even pay for your nurses aid training as they need nurses aids bad.  Drawback.  Pay is low, work is hard.

3.  Lastly, you dont actually have to have any training to do some thing for elderly care.  Housework, baby sitting, errands, etc.

There is a desperate need for elder care in all these areas, both "in home" and in hospitals and nursing homes.  In virtually all areas, a nurse or even nurses aides certificiation will land you a job.  As I said, each state is different, Colorado calls them "certified nurses aide", while Ohio calls them "State Tested Nursing Assistant".  They are pretty much the same thing.  The classes for nursing assistant are only a few weeks, and you can usually pass the test rather easily if you pay attention and do what they say even if you have just a basic background education.

Many start out as nurses aids, and wind up as nurses after more training.  Some nursing homes and hospitals will even pay for nurse courses, especially if you work there as a nurses aid.
