Your representative may help you.  (VSO or attorney).  Start there.  

Its "not always" necessary to retrieve all your records.  Example:  A well known Vets advocate was treated for a gun shot wound in Vietnam.  However, there was apparently no record of a the Veteran being shot in Nam, so he had difficulty documenting it.  

I cant recall how he did it, but Alex Graham won benefits back to 1994.  He is a hadit member, has his own column (on Veterans Hep C claims) and is now a non attorney practioner.  Perhaps Alex will chime in on how he was able to proceed without the (documentation) of his GSW.

If you served in a combat zone, the requirment for records is somewhat eased up.  After all, if bullets are flying over your head, the medic treating you may well be more interested in staying alive and keeping you alive, rather than entering this stuff in your personel file.  It would not be the first time in combat that documentation was neglected or even absent.
